I'm right there with you... The only thing that helps sometimes for us is rocking or putting on white noise just when baby starts to emerge from that first sleep cycle. This only works if he's tired enough to want to continue sleeping. Occasionally he'll find his fingers to suck on at the right moment and this will send him to sleep again but he's not yet coordinated enough to do it effectively each time. So yeah, I also spend a huge portion of my day rocking a baby to sleep. I'm convinced it'll change over time.

Once my LO learned how to put herself to sleep for naps (now at 3.5 mo) she's been taking longer naps because she can settle herself back down when she wakes up (I just have to give her the time!).

We had the same thing with my DD. We used to joke about the dreaded 40 minute mark! I've read that babies have 40 minute sleep cycles and until they know how to settle themselves back to sleep I think this is very common. My kid turned into a champion napper eventually but it did take some time.

Not to be a downer, but the only thing that changed DS' 30 minute naps was time. He began to outgrow it and extend his naps at around 8 months. It was very frustrating but got easier once I quit trying to fix it.

My LO is 4 months also (18 wks). He used to take 22 min crap naps until I nap trained him at 11 wks. But I totally understand what you mean about spending the entire day getting your LO to sleep/nap. Its good that you can get him back to sleep after he wakes up from a short nap.

Wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how to get my 4 month old to take longer naps? I feel like I've tried everything.

I can count on one hand how many naps over 36 minutes my LO has taken in the last 4 months. Seriously. You could set a watch to them. Sometimes they are shorter, but NEVER longer. Doesn't matter if it's in a swing, my arms, car seat, crib...never. We have a sound machine going. He was swaddled (we are weaning now). We time it perfectly. Doesn't matter. He's still tired because a lot of the time you can rock him back to sleep and he'll sleep another 36 minutes. He doesn't wake up slowly, either. He'll be completely knocked the hell out at 35 minutes, and then his eyes fly open and he starts kicking around.

Needless to say, the last 4 months have been brutal. I spend my entire day putting him to sleep it feels like. I know this is normal for some babies his age, but I guess I was looking to see if anyone had any suggestions I was missing? His night sleep used to be good, but now we're going through the 4 month regression and that sucks too. I just want to take a nap, damnit!
