@daniellemybelle: Oh no! I hope your mom is doing better. That sounds like a big ordeal but I'm glad it worked out!

We needed short term childcare when my mom who watched LO two days per week was injured. A nanny/sitter was too expensive and her regular daycare did not have any more days available. I called about 5,000 daycares and most had wait lists. Some in home daycares had availability but I personally had reservations and preferred a center or a church based preschool (the latter being what LO was used to). We were finally able to find a well regarded church based preschool very close to our house that had an opening. We were honest with them that we would likely be pulling LO out after about 12 weeks and that was not a problem to them.

We did still have some gaps to fill and we actually used a SAHM in our neighborhood and that worked out great. If I could have gone back I would have had her watch LO the whole time because LO didn't really like her second daycare. This mom was phenomenal and she kind of fell into our laps. She only watched LO and her own son (versus the in home daycares I talked to that had 5+ kids with one caregiver) and went above and beyond to make us feel comfortable. But it's really hard to find someone like that - I had asked everyone and their mother and that's how I ended up hearing about her. She also charged the same as daycare versus what a nanny typically charges so that was awesome.

@skipra: no, we paid the same rate which was pretty average for our area. I did find one cheaper but we chose ours because she had less children to watch and was much closer.

@Mrs. Lion: Thanks. There have been a ton of posts on our local mom's page with people looking for nannies so I'm wondering if there is just a shortage in our area. Did you have to pay a higher rate or average? Glad to hear you had a great experience!

We needed someone while I was on bed rest and I found quite a few at home providers who had no problem taking my son short term. we still have a relationship with the lady we chose and she now does occasional care for us when things come up. it worked out great for us. I found her through a local mom's Facebook group.

I am thinking about taking a seasonal job in the beginning of the year but the big concern is what to do about childcare. Ideally we would get a nanny but I am assuming it will be difficult to find someone interested in something short-term or if they were they would charge so much it wouldn't be worth it for me to work.
Does anyone have any suggestions or experience?
