My company offers 60% of your salary for STD for people who have worked there less than 5 or 6 years with an option for a buy-up to 80% for about $8 a pay period. People who have worked there longer than the 5 or 6 years (can't remember) automatically get the 80% with no option to buy-up. Maybe you can get Aflac? Not sure of the benefits of that as I haven't looked into it, though I know there is a stipulation about pregnancy and not delivering or conceiving (again, can't remember) within the first 10 months of your plan start.

If it's an employer plan, then they can specify the limits. I know a lot of employers who offer nothing. I'm in NY and the mandated state amount is only $160 a week or so. Aka next to nothing.

I took off 4 months but only 2 months were paid. I had a month worth of PTO and then had FMLA and short term disability for the next two months. Those two together did not equal my real paycheck though...

I had Prudential and the policy was that I would get 60% of my salary for 6 weeks after a 30 day waiting period. However, what I didn't realize/they didn't make clear was that the 30 days counted for part of the 6 weeks. So essentially, I got paid for 12 days (42 - 30 days) at 60% of my salary. Not even a full paycheck!

@LemonLong: @fussygal: thanks for the info!

I feel like I should be able to get more than 35%. I am definitely calling on monday. I don't see how maternity leave is feasible otherwise.

Our company also uses Guardian and I will get 8 weeks at 80% (as an employee benefit), then 8 weeks PTO. I also don't live in one of those states. Not sure if that's helpful but maybe gives you an idea of what is going on elsewhere :( Hope your able to find answers soon!

It's through my employer sort of. Its through guardian. Maybe it's capped at a certain amount? I have to pay the premiums though. They don't pay anything....

And I don't live in any if those states :(

Is that through your employer or an individual plan? If it's individual, you should be able to "buy-up" to a higher %.

Mine was 100% for 6 weeks, but that was through my employer and like @Mamasig, my position in the company.

A couple of states (NY, CA, RI, HI and I think a couple I'm forgetting) also have state-run disability and paid family leave options; so if you live in one of those states that's something else to look into too.

At my work place, it depends on your title. As VP, I get 8 weeks at 100%, and then I think 60% for the next 8 weeks. So with my maternity leave, I got 8 weeks at 100% pay, but then I used 2 weeks of vacation, and 2 weeks unpaid. I'll do the same this maternity leave. Two weeks unpaid is a bit more manageable.

Is it 60% of your gross or after tax?

Mine is more like 35% of after tax or 26% of gross.....

It seems crappy!

Mine is 60% but only 6 weeks is covered.
I took 12 weeks and I'm only paid for 2 because I had to go to part time at 28 weeks due to contractions and that affected my STD.

I just signed up for short term disability benefits through my employer. I can't remember the specifics, but I'm pretty sure I signed up for the maximum plan they offered and the weekly rate is not even 50% of my salary. Is this normal?

Is there something else I can get? Should I call and see if there is a different plan that offers more? Everything I read online says you can get it up to 70% of your salary?

I'm trying to think of future maternity leave with a #2 and I am terrified that we wont be able to afford it. I am the breadwinner, so 12 weeks off completely unpaid is not an option.

I should be able to save 3 weeks PTO, and short term disability covers 6 weeks, but at not even 50% salary, I'm questioning if We would survive! I am also planning on starting a savings account just for maternity leave :( This is depressing!
