That would make me super nervous to be pregnant or possibly be pregnant when signing up. The pre-existing clause is to prevent people from signing up for STD just because they are pregnant.
I know a coworker had just upped a current plan she had for extra hospital coverage, and she had it in writing from our aflac rep that there was no waiting period, and her rep had talked to her senior whomever, and Aflac STILL didn't pay for her newborn and she's trying to fight it now.

@peachykeen: I'm pretty sure it needs to be documented in a medical chart to count as a pre-existing condition. That means that you shouldn't call the doctor until after Dec. 1. Then there's no proof of whether or not you knew before coverage.

@raspberries: Thanks! I actually do have it in writing since I emailed the rep, which I'm thankful for. The only unclear part now is whether they would pay out for a pregnancy that is detected soon after Dec 1. There's supposedly no waiting period, but because of the way pregnancies are dated I could technically be pregnant but not know it yet...

When I signed up for the short term disability at my company I had a three month waiting period before I could get pregnant or else it wouldn't be covered. So although my coverage started July 1, I had to wait until October to start trying (though we waited longer than that).

@peachykeen: It might not be a bad idea to get that in writing from the rep - just in case you actually get pregnant and another rep tries to tell you something different. Isn't the whole thing ridiculous?

@T.H.O.U.: @josina: @catlady: @raspberries: Thanks for your insights & experience! I did finally get confirmation that they would consider them separate conditions - they say each pregnancy is treated as it's own separate claim.

The rep says the pre-existing condition would only come into play if I was pregnant on the plan start date (Dec 1) but the way the pre-existing condition section is written, I think being 2-3 weeks pregnant and not knowing yet would still let me qualify. The claim form asks when the condition is diagnosed, so hopefully I'm fine.

Pregnancy + life is confusing :meh:

Your miscarriage wouldn't count (it's a separate medical event.) BUT I agree with @josina: - they're considering any leave you take in the first 12 months as a pre-existing condition, so you'd have to wait at least 3-4 months to get pregnant so your actual leave would fall outside of the initial 12 month waiting period.

So if it goes into effect on December 1, 2016, you'd have to wait to take any STD leave until after Dec 1, 2017.

I don't think it should affect you. A miscarriage is actually sort of the opposite of a "pre-existing condition" when it comes to pregnancy, if you know what I mean. I've had multiple losses and it's never affected my STD coverage. Agree with previous poster though to make sure you verify when you can get pregnant and still have coverage. My STD requires that you have the policy in place at least 10 months before your due date, not 9 months. They want to be 100% sure you are not pregnant when your policy starts.

They should be two separate instances, but I think your due date would have to be after the 12 month period... so a pregnancy in December, right after you sign up, may not be covered? If I remember correctly I had to not-get-pregnant for at least 3 months after signing up for STD.

So here's a question:

My company may FINALLY be offering short-term disability as a benefit (with my first pregnancy my leave was completely unpaid). We have to sign up next week and the benefit would start Dec 1, 2016. The pre-existing condition clause states that you have a pre-existing condition if 1) you received medical treatment, consultation, care, or services including diagnostic measures for the condition in the 3 months just prior to your effective date of coverage AND 2) the disability begins in the first 12 months after your effective date of coverage. So a pregnancy diagnosed after Dec 1 without a pre-existing condition should be covered.

I got pregnant in September and miscarried in October. I had an appointment to confirm the pregnancy in September and an appointment with ultrasound to confirm the miscarriage in October. No other prenatal visits, since it was so early.

Given that the miscarried pregnancy technically was "diagnosed" in September, do you think they would cover a pregnancy "diagnosed" in December 2016 or in 2017? Does the miscarried pregnancy make a new pregnancy a pre-existing condition?

And would they even KNOW about such a brief pregnancy? (I miscarried at 7 weeks) Do they request past records for pregnancy coverage?

(No idea if this is on the right board - sorry!)
