@josina: in general, a standard benefit is 6 weeks for an vaginal delivery or 8 for a csection. Most plans have an elimination period before benefits begin, 8 days or 14 days is standard for a sickness which is what pregnancy falls into. Most group disability plans will pay the full 6/8 weeks after the ep, but since you have individual coverage with Aflac it could be different. at least that's how I think it normally goes.... I feel like I'm a little too tired to think correctly! Ha!

I used it two years ago when I had my daughter and it was a really easy process! The only sucky part was that (as others have mentioned) I didn't read the fine print until close to my due date and was super bummed to read that it only covers a small portion of leave. I had a 2 week waiting period since it's the cheaper plan so I think I got paid for a total of 4 weeks, rest were unpaid.

@josina: Both of us are taking the full 12 weeks off that our company allows, it was just so nice thinking that we would get some kind of pay for the whole time. Last time I got paid half for 8 weeks because I saved up all my vacation/sick time.

That sucks that to find out while on leave that it's not 12! Glad that you had the warning so you could prepare.
I'm glad to have a coworker that used it first or I would've assumed 6 weeks paid. My coworker also begged her dr. for an excuse to not work longer and she said there was no way Aflac would pay for it anyways. :/

@josina: Yeah, we were originally told that it would cover us for 12 weeks, but my coworker found out the hard way that it's only 5 (we have a 1-week period that is not covered). I have 1.5 weeks of vacation saved up to cover me for that period and I'm going out in the middle of a pay period, so I'll at least get one more full paycheck. But to say I am disappointed and angry is an understatement.

@snowjewelz: I have it already, and got it right after E was born, but curious as to how it all works when it actually comes time to use it. :)
@catlady: Glad to hear that the claiming part was easy, not something I want to be stressing over with a newborn!
@avivoca: I swear our original rep told me we got paid right away for the full 6 weeks... I need to dig through my old paperwork to see if I wrote this down! Nice to 'sell' it that way and then find out nope, only 5 weeks.

@snowjewelz: I have STD through The Hartford and our policy started after I was pregnant (though the company is allowing us to receive it) and it does take awhile for the paperwork to be processed, but we only get 5 or 7 weeks (which I just found out today). It's something at least, but we were led to believe that it would be more.

Yes, I used it once and will use it again. It was very easy once it was set up.

For the time until you get paid part, I believe that depends on the plan you choose. Mine has a 2 week period before getting paid, I think. Shorter times are more expensive. However for maternity leave, I don't think it affects the total time you get paid for. (Bear in mind, I could be wrong about this part since I didn't pay much attention to it, I just got the cheapest plan). Also note that the birth must occur 10 months or more after your plan starts (i.e. they want to know you are not pregnant when you sign up). My plan paid 6 weeks for vaginal birth or 8 weeks for c-section, at 60% of your pre-tax salary.

Claiming was easy. I emailed our Aflac rep a couple weeks before I was due and she sent me the claim form. I got it filled out after LO arrived and faxed it in once it was ready. I honestly don't remember how long it took to get paid, but not long at all. I remember being surprised at how quick and painless it was.

I *think* it's just extra paper work, and the money doesn't come super fast since they have to first process all the paper work. But don't you have to sign up before you're actually pregnant?

Has anyone used this? I'm wondering how easy/complicated the whole process is.

From what I know I get 6/8 weeks but the first week is not paid, and it takes about a week to get all the paper work in order, but deposit is the next day once filed, and will be for the full amount (5/7 weeks).

Wish my boss would just give me paid leave and make it easy :)
