Thank you everyone. It's hard not to worry, especially when comparing to other children too. And I know I shouldn't do that!

I will continue doing what we are doing.

this was 100 percent my son. I had bad PPA, so every down moment I was web searching this to see if it meant anything. He ended up being a VERY good talker - like expressive and sense of humor by 20 months. 10 months is way too early to be concerned!

My oldest started babbling at 10 months. We had no words and few consonants at 15 months. I called early intervention at that time. He was accessed at 16 months as 12 months and 25% behind, which meant he qualified for services where we were.

DS stayed home with us and we are quiet people. Some reading but very little talking. I'd say, do what you are doing and continue to watch. Don't be afraid to call early intervention as I believe that the screening is free.

My older son had apraxia and a severe delay. This started to become noticeable at 15-18 months when he couldn’t say anything other than the sound ‘guh’. He was also late to point at things. He’s now improved drastically with early intervention, ear surgery and lots of therapy that he was discharged from his SLP. Aside from a few sound/word quirks, you would never know.

At your LO’s age, I wouldn’t be concerned, just keep monitoring. The best thing you can do is to be face to face and draw attention to your mouth when speaking. Praise any attempt at vocalization even if incorrect sound or response. Read and point out things as much as possible.

My younger son is developing on track and I don’t believe we will have issues with his speech. The difference is extremely noticeable between them when I compare ages. It doesn’t hurt to ask for an evaluation/referral but at this stage I wouldn’t even consider it until 18 months.

As a mom of a speech-delayed kiddo, don't worry about anything until their 2nd birthday. I cannot tell you the amount of people I have talked to whose children experienced a language explosion between 1.5-2. Your LO is still a baby.

I echo everyone else- I would not be concerned! All three of mine were all late to say their first words but were completely caught up by 1.5-2 years old. Keep having conversations with your baby, sing to him, read to him, and enjoy him!

I wouldn't be worried yet. But speech therapists often say one of the best things you can do is face your baby toward you when you read to them. So they can see your mouth. Think story time at the library style. Or sit in a big armchair with your feet up so your knees are a back rest for baby and hold the book on your chest.

At 10 months where he is at is not a concern at all.

And usually speech comes in leaps and bounds...whenever that occurs varies by kid though. My first was before 1 and my second only had a few words at 15 months and three just after 18 months started talking a lot. I now know not to be too terribly concerned with a lot of stuff until later. I think we sometimes expect a lot out of kids when they’re little just because there’s usually a similarly aged young child who is “ahead”. I know that happens for me all the time anyway, comparing my kids to others. I hope my third is benefitting from my slightly more chill parenting.

Just continue reading and singing as suggested above. Also, adding in baby sign can be helpful so they can communicate without getting frustrated if they don’t have the words. I just try to make sure I say everything out loud the right way when they’re little and learning to talk. And if they’re pointing at a toy then say “oh, you want me to get you the truck?” For example.

Thank you! I feel better. I feel like most babies by now are talking more so I just wanted to make sure I am doing all I can!

I definitely don’t think there’s any reason to make an appointment before the 1 year visit. At that point ask your doctor specifically when you need to be concerned. There is a wide range of normal when it comes to speech and speech therapy would typically not start until 2-3.

I feel like when they are making big leaps in other areas, especially gross motor skills, they can't focus on the speech at the same time.

I wouldn't worry at this point and just keep talking, reading, singing, etc.

We did a few simple signs around that age. More and all done were the most helpful for us, especially at mealtimes.

No. At 15 months they should know approx 3 words. Animal sounds included.

I’m not a pediatrician but it seems way too early to be worried about speech delay. There is a wide range of normal and I’m not sure I’ve ever even tracked at what age my kids used consonant sounds. My second did end up needing speech therapy but we didn’t make that determination until she was two and didn’t have as many words as my pediatrician indicated she should have. She did a year of speech therapy and is all caught up. I’d just keep reading and talking to your baby and not worry too much at this point.

LO will be 10 months on Feb 3. He has not started using consonants yet. In the last couple weeks he has started being more vocal but no consonants. No mamama ot dadada.

He will imitate sometimes when I blow raspberries. He responds to his name and I'm pretty sure he knows the word "kitty" as he will look at the cats if I say it. It could be coincidence though.

He has been crawling and pulling himself up to stand. He loves to dance. He has been pointing and making "uuuuh" sounds when he does.

I'm just wondering if I should be concerned? Maybe he is focusing on the other skills and talking hasn't been a priority for him? He has always been a quiet and calm baby.

At his 9 month appt the dr said he should be using consonants soon. I didnt ask at which point I should be concerned. Not sure if there is a point where i should make another appt.
