My 6 month old sometimes sleeps through the night and sometimes wakes for a feeding between 1-4. I usually let him fuss / cry a little if he wakes before I think he's ready for a feeding. Last night, he woke at 11, which is odd....and I knew he ate a ton during the day so I knew it wasn't hunger. So I let him cry for like 5 minutes and he just fell back asleep. He did the same thing at 3:30 and I actually got up to feed him but he stopped crying and ultimately slept through til 5:30.

My lo is almost 6 months and during her 5th month, she got two teeth. That week, she was so clingy and needy. I nursed her every time she woke up because it was the only way to get her back to sleep. She has different cries for hungry or just upset, though. She hardly EVER cries overnight unless she is hungry. I would just feed her - your body will adjust.

@BabyBoecksMom: Yes, I can't figure out whether he just needs help going back to sleep or if he's hungry (or in pain due to teething?)

@Sammyfab: I wonder how I can tell if he's hungry or not? He goes to sleep on his own. We let him fuss it out. *Sigh* He's up earlier than usual again like yesterday and crying. I hope this is not a new habit, but I'm afraid it will be!

If she's going through a growth spurt, she may need the extra calories. If it's a sleep regression, she may just need help going back to sleep. I had a tough time figuring out the difference so I would try to rock/sway her at first before offering the breast. Sometimes I would send DH in to see if she was really hungry or wanting to comfort nurse.

To answer one of your mini-questions: the 6 month growth spurt isn't a big deal because it is the time that you will likely be adding solids. For this reason, I didn't even notice it, as far as nursing goes.

I always try and soothe my LO first before I feed her, I know she can go all night without eating in general so I only feed her if she won't settle without it.

I guess the question is if your LO is actually hungry when he wakes earlier. I personally wouldn't just nurse to get my LO back to sleep when I know he's not really hungry because that may cause a sleep dependency. does he nurse to sleep or go to sleep on his own?

I would try to soothe to sleep first and if he acts hungry I would nurse.

Lastly, my LO didn't really go thru a growth spurt at 6 months. :)

I nurse P any time she wakes up. She'll be 8 mths next week. I don't mind though because I know that it helps my supply get through those times she doesn't eat much during the day (distractible baby "syndrome") & I want to nurse a long time so anything to keep that relationship strong is a-okay with me. :)

You're body will "catch up" just like every other growth spurt so don't worry about the upcoming growth spurt. :)

Take comfort in the fact that your body will adjust to how much milk your baby needs - when you hit that growth spurt, he'll nurse more, and after a day or two you'll have more.

DS (4.5 Month Old)) goes to bed at 7:30PM and usually wakes up for one feeding anytime between 1:30 - 4:30 AM. I am okay with this current arrangement. However, there have been two nights where he would wake up and cry at times that are not between those feeding hours. Yesterday, he woke up at 11PM crying, and my pediatrician had mentioned dreamfeeding to help him sleep through the night, so I tried it. However, he woke up again at 2:30 AM which is around his typical feed time, and unfortunately, because he had eaten already at 11, my body did not have time to fully replenish. He noticed the difference and started to fuss. My body seems to have reached an equilibrium and it doesn't seem to be able to accommodate even ONE extra feeding! Sheesh!! (How will I survive that 6 month growth spurt??!!) Should I just try to get him back to sleep without feeding him, only to have to get up with him later for his usual feeding time?

In general, he's been a good sleeper, so I really don't know what to do with him if he's waking up during different times of the night. What do you do? Is there a way to prevent LO from waking up at odd hours? Hahahaha. I guess if there was, we would all be sleeping through the night, huh? =P I can only attribute this to teething, because what else could it possibly be??!! >_<
