All we would do at work is xray it- and put you in a boot (regardless of sprained or fractured). Usually weight bearing for a little too. They heal up pretty fast! Elevate !!

When I hurt my ankle it was similar to what you described, I was able to walk home on it, but once I was off it for a while (like sleeping) I couldn't put weight on it. I went to the doctor the next day and although it wasn't broken it was likely I tore a ligament (can't see that on an x-ray). I ended up in a walking boot which helped a lot and I was able to function that way. Once I had the boot I could see how badly my foot was bruised...the whole outer side was dark purple! I also wrapped my ankle with an ace bandage at night to help with the swelling.

Since you are in your 3rd trimester, it might be nice to have some sort of support (walking boot or something else) for your ankle. The extra weight is likely going to make it more difficult to walk on, or cause pain down the line.

@Ocean girl: That's a good idea about anti-inflammatory meds...I see my Dr tomorrow, so I think I'm gonna try putting it off until then to see if ice and elevation helps much at all today. It seems to be feeling better as the day goes on.

Still not fun, though...I had stuff to do today, lol.

Growing up playing basketball, we were always taught to RICE sprained ankles:
Rest
Ice
Compression
Elevate
If the swelling has already gone down that's a great sign. If you're currently KU it may be worth a call to your doctor for some anti-inflammatory suggestions since ibuprofen is out.

@Dandelion: I used to sprain my ankles a lot! The main thing is to keep weight off of it, and minimize swelling (ice, elevate, wrap). That will help it heal and help with pain.

I'd ask around about a crutch or cane... no point in buying one if you can borrow!

@Dandelion: there are 3 degrees of sprains... it might be worth Googling to see the symptoms of each. If it's a second or third degree sprain, I might see a doctor. They can help speed recovery with a foot boot.

There are a lot of online resources for treating sprains... lots of great advice on home remedies!

@mrbee: I have none of the above lol. Except ice. Maybe I'll try that.

@Dandelion: do you have a crutch you can use or borrow? I'd also look into wrapping it... plus I usually ice a sprain. Maybe also elevate the foot.

You can probably home treat a sprain. If the pain is persistent or sharp though, I'd get an x-ray!

I tripped down the last stair outside my in laws apartment last night and twisted my ankle. It swelled and I was able to get in the car and get in the house when I got home. It was just a bit sore then, once I got over the initial twist.

During the night, the swelling has gone down but the foot hurts pretty bad. I can't put much weight on it.

Should I just wait it out a bit longer and see if its better later? What can a doctor do anyways? Just x ray it and give me pain meds?
