Have you talked to them about how you feel? If you haven't, it might be worthwhile to have a conversation and be prepared with your qualifications, contributions you've made, etc....then you maybe you can talk about being considered for a promotion sooner. If a degree is all that stands in the way, then say you want to be considered as soon as you get it. If the company values you and it is a good company, then they will probably be amenable to do things to retain you.

And, don't feel guilty about looking, if you decide to. Everyone wants to move up in the world and make more money, and looking for a new spot is sometimes the best way to do it. Good luck!

I definitely wouldn't quit your job before you have another one lined up. It can be hard to find a new one, and I think a prospective employer would be confused why you quit.

@tororojo: Having all debt paid off is amazing!! I hope to get there, or close to there one day. I've come to terms that I will always most likely have a mortgage. But our darn student loans are what's killing me right now (we owe 50k combined) and....well...I want a baby!!! :-)

But back to the topic, I think I will stick it out a little longer and just see how it goes here. I will just try and keep building up my resume, and take advantage of the tuition reimbursement.

@MrsBrewer: In that case, you need money!!! Babies, yeah! We both make very little but we have all of our debt paid off, so that's a huge blessing. We were planning to put off babies for a little while longer, but our first is due at the end of Feb!

@MrsBrewer: That sucks! But it'll work out eventually. If it makes you feel better, I have 2 degrees, but I work for a non-profit and make even less than you! :) Just remember, money can't buy happiness (although admittedly, it can buy lots of fun stuff!)

@tororojo: True about better pay with a degree. What just sucks though is that I'm going on 3+ years of accounting experience. The only reason I don't have my degree was because I just couldn’t afford to pay for classes! It's just an aggravating situation when I have he experience but not a degree. I'm sure there are other people in the same boat! But Now days, degrees are everything.

I would wait it out for awhile so that it looks better on your resume, and personally I'd try to wait until you get your degree--at that point you can either see if your current company will promote you, or you'd be in a really good place to get hired by another one! Plus, you might get paid a higher starting salary if a place hires you with a degree instead of hiring you while you're still working on it.

@blackbird: Insurance is ok, nothing to brag about. No 401k matching is available. But they have agreed to pay up to 50% of tuition and book costs (depending on course relevance), which was a big plus to me since I'm working on finishing my degree.

Maybe I'm just feeling bitter about this situation and I should sit and wait it our a few more months.

You might be able to do better pay wise (although 30K/year without a college degree isn't bad, either), but what about the other benefits? It's close to home, you fit in with everyone (work environment is a biggie)....surely there are some non-direct pay benefits, like healthcare, 401K, anything else to consider?

@jessiejo17: Thank you for your opinion! I wanted to hear from someone with some HR expereince, that's perfect. I guess I do sound pretty conceided. But I guess I'm a little more irritated about the "promotion" thing though becuase I was hired on in the position, with them telling me I will be a project accountant. They wanted me to be. So I guess I just pretty much had my hopes up for that.

That being said, I do feel grateful I have a job, but making just barely over 30k/year is pretty rough when my friend that I mentioned before was making 40k+ So I think I might be sounding greedy, but i think I could do much better, pay wise that is.

Doesn't sound personal. Sounds like you haven't been there long enough and don't have all the specifications to move up yet. Also, leaving a job this fast will look poorly on your resume for the next employer.
If you are happy there and are just a little jaded on the current situation I'd stick it out,. Prob better for you in the long run.

You don't even have your degree yet, and if it's a job requirement, then of course you shouldn't be considered for a promotion. 16 classes isn't just right around the corner, either, if it's 3 credits/class, you're only halfway through your education, right? And a promotion after <5 months seems unrealistic. If you like the other things about your job, stick it out for awhile longer. 5 months is where you're just starting to get your feet wet anyways. And everybody has things they dislike about their job.

It also doesn't look good if you haven't been at your current job for very long. At least at my company, it doesn't. Who's to say we shouldn't hire you, then you'd up and leave in a few months?

I agree with PP that you shouldn't take it personal, most companies wont' consider a promotion that quickly and accounting is such a specific field that I can see where a degree would be necessary in their eyes (especially during audit time.)

Having done some work in HR awhile ago it really raised a flag if a person wasn't a job at least a year, or had 3 or more jobs in 5 years, we considered them job hoppers and not worth the investment of training unless a really good interview with good reasoning. Don't take this the wrong way, but if you told me in an interview that you were upset about missing out on a promotion after 4 months of working for a business, I would throw up a red flag for sure.

I would say it's business, not personal. Don't make it personal by worrying about "letting them down" or whatnot. If they take it that way, then that is pretty unprofessional in general.

Given that, I don't think it would look bad on the resume, as long as you don't hop around alot like that - this would need to be an isolated incident.

@Foodnerd81: I always try to give as much notice as possible when leaving a job, normally 2-3 weeks. But a minimum of 2.

Do you think it will look bad on my resume though being at a job less than 1 year?

I think it's a lot to expect to be promoted after only being with the company for 4.5 months. And many positions have a college degree as a requirement. Even though you are close your employer has no was of knowing for sure that you will finish the degree. So I don't think you can hold it against them that they didn't give you a position you weren't qualified for.

However, if you aren't happy, certainly look around. Some companies may not mind that you were only at your current job for a short period of time. When you interview you can just say that it didn't turn out to be a good fit for you. But I definitely wouldn't quit your job until you have secured a new one.

I know what you mean about feeling guilty, but at the end of the day, the company isn't looking out for you, YOU have to look out for you. People change jobs. It's not like they did anything out of the ordinary for you that you should feel special loyalty to them, right? They are just a decent place to work.

I'm not saying you should leave right away, but if you aren't happy and aren't being compensated as much as you think you should be, I think you should definitely see what is out there. You would still give them appropriate notice if you find something better, and I don't think you owe them more than that.

@Rachel: I know and that's true about the grass being greener. But this is a small-ish company ( I would say less than 100 employees) They are notorious for promoting all the wrong people! Our receptionst was just promoted to a purchasing manager within being here for 3 months.

But I would have to say that you're right I'm not 100% happy here. Plus I was comparing pay with a friend of mine (same skill set and schooling) she was making a considerable amount more than I do here. I just think I might be able to do better.

Does anyone else have a guilty feeling though, making it feel like you are letting your company and coworkers down? That's what I'm struggling with.

I wouldn't take it personally that you weren't considered - I know at my work new hires are generally expected to stay in the position for which they were hired for at least 6 months to a year before they move on/up in the company.

That being said, if you're not totally happy, there's no harm in looking for something new. Just keep in mind that the grass is always greener on the other side :)

I started my job in April (I have been here now about 4 ½ months) and I really liked it at first. I fit in the everyone, the job was challenging, and I love the location (close to home). Well there has been a shift lately and basically the Manager quit, and everyone “moved up” to the next position. Well I wasn’t even considered for “moving up” to my next position. Basically I’m in school for my Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, and the position “requires” a degree. I’m just 16 classes away from my degree and my employer knows this. I have excelled so far in everything I have been taught. I actually was helping cross train someone in another department. It’s just annoying to me that I wasn’t even considered, and they go and hire someone for the position.

My dilemma though is I feel like I am “letting them down” if I start looking. I have only been here for a couple months, and I have basically just settled in. Also how will future employers feel about that on my resume? I was at me previous job for 2 years before I came here. I want to find a company where I can stay at for a while and grow!  But I just feel inside guilty, 100% guilty for even considering looking around. My husband and my best friend are encouraging me to look though. What would you do?
