@Leah: hi- things are the same, if not maybe worse! :( But actually after reading how you hold your LO for all naps, I kinda accepted it too and have been doing that A LOT. Trying to enjoy it while it lasts, I guess. I keep changing my mind as to when I should train him, because everyone has an opinion and I don't quite know what my own opinion is yet about it. Haha. how are you guys doing? Any improvement for you?

@BabyTsMom: 30 minutes. One time I did let him cry for 45 minutes because it was looking like he might go off to sleep (he didn't). It may indeed the same way at 6 months, but I am praying it isn't. I'm believing this article right now and holding on to hope. I think I will revisit sleep training (MOTN) and nap training at the same time just in case there was some confusion in baby's mind.

didn't have time to read all the replies, but we nap/night trained around 3 months for both our boys.

we did a type of cio -- basically, swaddle, soother, and if they kept crying and spitting out the soother I would replace the soother 2-3 times, maybe stroke his nose/forehead a few times and leave. I think it took a week or two, but they both caught on soon after that and we've never had any trouble with sleep after that. :) for us, the swaddle was super important, they cried a million times less with the swaddle. anyway, that's what worked for us!

@Leah: aw...I feel like this is what my experience is going to be like! What was your maximum limit for crying? But for me I think it doesn't matter what age he is. The reaction will be the same... It's just a matter of me being ok with it at what age, I guess.

@BabyTsMom: way too much crying! He reached my maximum crying threshold three times before falling asleep the first day. When he finally fell asleep, it was more like he crashed rather than he figured out how to fall asleep. I made it through half of the second day. After reading all the nap training blog posts on hellobee I decided that amount of crying was abnormal. I knew from the beginning that timed checks wouldn't work with my determined chap so I was doing the extinction method.

@BabyTsMom: yep! I have to keep it a secret from my husband's family or they'll think I'm bonkers. First nap is typically 1.5 hrs or less, second nap is around an hour and 3rd nap is less than an hour. Sometimes there's a really brief 4th nap. Needless to say, the house is a mess and my husban is short on clean underwear!

@meredithNYC: thanks! Sorry I kept referring to your LO as "he"! Sounds like your LO was just very adaptable and/or ready for routine. Great job!
@Leah: @ms.janedoe: sometimes when I'm holding him, I admit that I like it. :) he's not going to be this tiny forever! Maybe I should just do it until he is a little older, then train him. So are you guys holding your LOs for hour-long naps, multiple times a day? I'd better get the netflix App on my ipad! :)
@NovBaby1112: I think I'll try nursing him today. Just a little snack before bed? Haha. We'll see how it goes.

@BabyTsMom: also, if you are following EASY, he might be hungry right before his nap if it has been awhile. My LO did EAES for a long time. I found she napped better if she nursed right before her nap and slept on a fully belly. He might even be waking early from his nap if he's hungry! Honestly, I would try nursing to sleep for naps if it is working for nightime. If it aint broke don't fix it. Why make things harder on yourself? If you arent comfortable doing CIO at this age and think he would cry for a long time, I would nurse to sleep or use swing until you feel he's old enough to sleep train.

You're ahead of the game! Hahahaha, LO is 9 months and...I'm still holding her/nursing her for...almost every nap. :/

I was going to nap train when I sleep trained her for nights at 6 months, but then decided to put it off so she wouldn't be overtired and make nights harder...and then I've just never done it. I NEED to get on it and do it...soon. Blah. It's just so easy to sit there and sit on my phone!

@BabyTsMom: Hold that baby :-) I am currently holding my 5 month old through his naps and misery loves company. We are planning on nap training 1 week before he turns 6 months. Like you I think our baby is SUPER persistent and our nap training attempt at 4.5 was a disaster. Now I use his nap time to text, browse the Internet and send emails on my phone. It's the only time I get on Hellobee. The plus side is that most timeswhen baby wakes after a short nap I can respond quickly and get him back to sleep. I comfort myself by noting that I am preventing him from being overtired in preparation for sleep and nap training soon!

@BabyTsMom: Well, I started by just getting a solid routine going starting around 2 months - bath, lights dimmed/quiet, bottle and bed around 7:30. That worked pretty well and took LO down to about 1-2 wakings per night. She would often fuss a bit before sleeping, but rarely full-on cried, you know? I will say that she was not swaddled by this point because she has a strong personality and always fought the swaddle!

The training came in around 3 months after I read "Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Baby" and started implementing some of the author's strategies (boring book, but helpful!). One thing I will say is that I had stopped nursing at this point and one thing that helped is, I would go to bed not all that long after LO went as I was always exhausted. My husband worked late so he would come home around 10:30/11:00, make a bottle and give the baby a "dream feed". During this feed she didn't really even wake up and so it wasn't a big production. She would then sleep until 6:30/7:00 the next morning. It was great. So I'm not really sure if it was the routine, formula, just her getting older, the dream feed or what, but it worked. Every night was not perfect, but she really didn't cry longer than 15 minutes and if she did we would check on her.

@meredithNYC: details, please!! Extinction or checks? Can you also describe your LOs temperament? did he cry more than he fussed, or did he get really upset during the CIO? And how long did it take for you guys? Was it your goal to get longer naps or was it to be able to put him down without struggling? Thanks in advance!
@sotofamilia: haha. Good question. I guess I've been very loosely trying to stick to the EASY thing but it never works because he doesn't nap for very long and I don't feed him every hour or anything. Also, he doesn't get drowsy when nurse him during the day. Although I haven't tried it in a dark room for naps....... I guess I'm trying to minimize bad habits since I've already got so many going at the moment (swing, nursing to sleep for night, holding him for naps, etc)!!!!!

@BabyTsMom: girl, why aren't you nursing to sleep for naps too, if that works for nighttime sleep? Use your tools!

I do think 11 weeks is too early for CIO.

@sailgrl18: sounds like a success story to me! Did your LO cry a lot during training, or was it more like fussing. If he did cry, was it for a long time? Did you night train at the same time?
My LO has a strong temperament, and I fully expect him to put up a huge fight. But this is happening now anyway, when I try to put him down for his naps. And it will be the case if I try to train when he's older. sigh. I don't know.

@BabyTsMom: At 6.5 months he still isn't a fan of naps but he's a rockstar napper. He will often yell out when I put him in his crib but he's out almost immediately and takes 2 1.5 hour naps and a 45 minute nap. It took about a week to get him to fall asleep within 5 minutes on his own. With increased wakefulness we just had to start watching his tired signs again and put him down based on those instead of time. It also changed the routine again because he nurses every 2 hours and we had an EASY routine and we ended up nursing both before and after naps.

@lawbee11: yeah my LO takes catnaps all day. And even getting him to take those naps is so hard.
ack! It's hard not knowing what the right thing to do is. I don't think any sort of no-cry solution is going to work on him, now or later. Even now, if I try to soothe him if he's crying for a nap, it seems to make things worse a lot of the time. sigh. I don't know! now I'm just rambling at this point. Lol.

@sailgrl18: ha! My son does the same sometimes. How long did it take for your LO to hate naps? What/how did you adjust for the 4 month increase in wakefulness?

@BabyTsMom: We did a lot of swing naps or naps in the bouncer while I bounced her with my foot at that age. It was really rough. I called my husband crying on several occasions. My LO would take FIVE 20-30 min naps/day. Only you know what you're comfortable with. I was at my breaking point and thought nap training would solve my problems, but instead it made me feel more guilty (when we tried it at 3.5 months). Just offering another perspective!

We nap trained at 3 months because of the same issues. It worked for us and was life changing. We did ferber checks and I followed Mrs. Bee's nap training where if it he cried for more than 20 minutes I would either soothe (if it was early in the day) or scrap the nap. He ended up only having a few last nap of the day scrapped. He lengthened his naps and was much happier when he woke up (he used to wake screaming). For a month it was awesome because I knew his awake times so well and he would go down almost immediately. However, at 4 months he went from being up 1hr to being up 2hr so there was some adjustment needed then.

@scg00387: @lawbee11: so since my LO cries every time I put him in his crib for naps, do you think I should just resort to holding him for all of his naps? Until he's a bit older? Which is when- 4.5.6 months?

@twoofeverything: sounds like it was a success! I have a very short routine but he always cries while I'm singing. Lol! Even if I hold him until he's very drowsy, the second input him down he starts wailing. This is my frustration. I do feel like I am reading his cues, and have even tried playing around with his wake times but I get the same poor results. Gah!

Our daycare basically nap trained E starting at 12 weeks. I doubt it was CIO nap training, though. I had started a couple weeks earlier putting her down for bed at set intervals, though. Every 2 hours, I think....but it really sank in after a few weeks of daycare.
