@erinpye: I wholeheartedly agree with this!

I agree with what you did, including a disclaimer that the owner personally reached out to you and tried to rectify the situation. I get that it left you feeling uncomfortable, but like erinpye said, this is his business that means a lot to him. He probably does highly value customer satisfaction and want to maintain a good reputation.

I'm glad you updated it, I absolutely would have. I was a business owner and got 1 bad review once, and I did everything I could to make it right, because I cared about the client, her happiness, and my business. In today's online world, a single negative review, even if deserved, can affect someone's livelihood far more than you'd suspect, and cost that owner and his family hundreds to thousands of dollars in business. If someone made such a personal effort to make it right with me, I wouldn't want to hurt his future work.

@Modern Daisy: that sounds like the perfect way to handle it. I have updated reviews before when I have been contacted to let folks know that the management does care and did contact me, offered me something, etc.

Okay, thanks to your feedback I just updated my review to add that the owner contacted me to apologize. I didn't modify the original text or change the rating. I feel like that would be lying because my experience was very bad and honestly I'm not sure he really "got" what the problem was. I appreciate that he reached out to me but I also feel like my privacy was violated a little.. Does that make sense?

@peachykeen: I did not lose any money because thankfully the bad service happened before I gave a deposit! I only lost time and was very frustrated because I had a time and $ sensitive question that I needed a response to.

Agreed. I had the same thing happen. I updated my review and said something like "the company reached out and has tried to rectify the situation".... honesty all around.

I would keep it up, but post a follow up. I would say something like "After I posted the initial review, the owner contacted me, apologized for my experience, and we had a positive conversation about how he could improve his business. I appreciate that he took the time to reach out to me."

The gift card does seem like he is trying to "buy" your review. Did you lose money due to the poor service? Is there any logical reason for him to offer the $100? (especially instead of a refund?)

I think I would probably modify my review, leaving the poor review from before but then stating that the owner did reach out to me to try to remedy the situation. I'm not sure whether I would accept the gift card or not depending on whether I felt it was appropriate compensation.

What a tough situation he put you in!

I posted a bad review once and was called and offered free stuff afterwards. They never asked if I would take the review down but it was implied. It actually made me more annoyed, like they were trying to pay me off. I left the review and never redeemed any of their freebies.
ETA maybe you can update to review to say they apologized if you still feel bad?

you could edit the review to add that the company reached out to you etc. I wouldn't take it down, but I think if I read a negative review and then saw that the company tried to make it better, I would be impressed.

I posted a while back about whether or not I should write a negative online review of a company that gave me terrible service and got a lot of great advice, so now I'm back with a follow-up.

I posted the review and kept it short, factual and non-emotional. I didn't name any employee names. About a week after it went up, the owner of the company called my cellphone and apologized up and down for my negative experience and wanted to hear more about what went wrong so they could avoid making the same mistake. I was a little annoyed that he called me because the review was supposed to be anonymous (yelp), but I appreciated that he cared and it was a positive conversation. The thing that bugged me a little though was that he kept blaming the sales guy who had been ignoring me when I tried to tell him (and wrote in the review) that it was really the managers fault since I asked to speak to a manager and no one ever reached out to me.

On Christmas Eve (a month or so after the call) I got a FedEx package with a note of apology and a $100 visa gift card. Again, I appreciate the gesture but I kind of feel like he is trying to get me to take down my review and I'm not sure if I should. He never outright asked me to but he kept referencing it during our phone call and pointed out how he was upset that the only two negative reviews show up on yelp and there are also positive reviews that are hidden.

I know this isn't a huge deal at the end of the day but I'm just curious to see what everyone else would do! Part of me wants to keep it up because the service was really bad (hence the review, which I've almost never done before) and I feel like I'm being bought. But on the flip side I don't want to "stand my ground" to an extreme or anything.
