@Anagram: Ugh, I totally feel for you! AT this point I would actually be happy with a 2am wakeup because we were always able to fall back asleep after those. This 4:30am wakeup is just killing us..

@hilsy85: Thanks that's good advice! I never realized that might be adding to the problem.

My first daughter did this, too, at that exact age and it went on until she was 10 months old. At 10 months, she just stopped waking up and was sleeping 12-14 hours straight.

I don't see harm in sleep training now but I do think he'll eventually drop that wakeup.

@Modern Daisy: oh that is a REALLY long time for him to be awake before his first nap! Babies are always more tired in the morning, so that wake time should always be shortest...I would definitely have them try putting him down for his first nap earlier.

NO advice, just commiseration. Our LO is almost 10 months and still wakes up 1-3 times a night and eats once. But it's more like asleep at 7:30, wake at 2 am to eat, (hopefully) sleep till 6-6:30 then up for the day. I've tweaked her bedtime later and earlier and she still wakes up at the same time, so I give up. She does not want to sleep 12 hours overnight.

@hilsy85: Yes, lol! If he "sleeps in" until 5:30 he can last until 10am before his first nap. Maybe he isn't sleeping enough? It's hard to know since he's in daycare all week and they write it on the sheet but I don't know how accurate it is. I've caught them fibbing on the sheet many times about how much he's eaten and when his diaper was changed, so I'm sure the nap info is not 100% correct.

@Modern Daisy: In our situation, one thing that we did from when LO was about 3 months was do a "dream feed" - meaning, she went down for bed around 7pm and then my husband would go in around 10:30/11pm and feed her a small bottle (and change her if necessary) while she was still pretty much asleep. Then she would sleep until 7am the next day.

However, I know this isn't for everyone. For one thing, I needed my husband to do the dream feed since I was exhausted by then and also, totally afraid of messing it up and waking her (postpartum anxiety issues!). For another, my LO generally didn't poop overnight so we were lucky that way. But, if it's something you would be willing to try it might be worth a shot?

@Modern Daisy: wait, he's waking for the day at 530 and napping at 10? Or do you mean that's when his wake up is? When is he up for the day?

At that age, my LO could only do about 2.5-3 hours before his first nap, so if he was up at 6, he was napping by 8:30.

Early morning wakeups are also often caused by being overtired--is it possible he's not napping enough?

@hilsy85: His naps are pretty normal, he normally takes a nap in the morning and the afternoon, about an hour each. On days when he wakes a little earlier like closer to 4/4:30 his first nap is usually at 9ish, days when he makes it to 5:30 he can last until 10.

@meredithNYC: I have a friend who used that trick with her daughter when she was this age and it never stopped her from waking, but maybe it helped in the long run shifting her calorie intake to more during the day. Since we have to change his diaper anyway that isn't such a bad idea!

@hilsy85: I would agree with that if it weren't for our experience the other day. He's always extremely tired and fussy in the mornings until his first nap. When he randomly slept in I swear it was like we had switched babies with someone, I didn't recognize him! AT the same time though I wonder if leaving him would even work? Like you said if he's just UP for the day then it would be hours of screaming for nothing..

@Modern Daisy: Okay, if he has a poopy diaper then that makes things harder since you definitely have to deal with that :(

For the bottle, though, I second @hilsy85 in that you should gradually reduce the amount he gets. At his age he probably doesn't need the bottle, but it's best to be absolutely sure.

@Tidybee: Haha, if you knew our baby you would laugh at this! There is no soothing him back to sleep without a bottle, never has been. If we tried that we would have a screaming baby probably for the next week straight.

Ehhh....I would be hesitant to sleep train for that waking. He's waking at a point in the night where he could legitimately get up for the day then, instead of going back to sleep after his bottle. Early morning wake ups like that are the hardest to sleep train for IME.

I would maybe start by reducing the amount he gets in his bottle; maybe he'll stop waking up for it when it gets to a low amount. If he is still waking for 1oz, and then going back to sleep, I think you can assume he's not hungry and then I would feel comfortable sleep training. But honestly, if my LO wakes up at 530, he is UP for the day--no turning back!

I also think it's untrue that all babies should be sleeping 12 hours straight. My LO will sleep anywhere from 10.5-12, and his naps fluctuate too. I know very few babies who stick to an exact, robotic schedule-- so much depends on a million different factors.

@meredithNYC: It's definitely just fussing. He stands in his crib and makes fussy sounds until we come in with a bottle. He always has a poopy diaper though, not that it every bothers him during the day.

Maybe if you just drop that bottle, his body won't wake him up expecting to eat. I would try to just soothe him back to sleep. It might be a rough few mornings, but I think our ped encouraged us to drop the 4:30 feed at her 6 mknth appt. I sent DH in the few times she woke up and she started to then go
Without it.

DS is 8 months old and goes to bed at 7pm every night. He wakes up once for a bottle and diaper change between 4am - 5:30am and most of the time goes back down for another 30 minutes to an hour afterwards.

There are a couple of issues I have with this. First, the obvious one is that DH and I have been extremely sleep deprived. We both work full time and it's impossible to get back to sleep after getting up at that time of the morning. Second, I know DS is sleep deprived as well. He is always extremely tired and fussy in the morning, for the longest time I just thought it was normal, but the other morning he "slept in" until 7:30am and was extremely happy and energetic. It was like we had a totally different baby, he's never been like that in the morning before. And finally, a few months ago our pediatrician said that he should be sleeping 12 hours straight and if he isn't that we should leave him (assuming nothing is wrong) so that he learns to sleep this long.

On the flipside, DS has been sick 5 times in the past 3 months (since starting daycare), 4 times it was pretty serious. Because of that I'm sure he regressed a little, but at the same time we weren't comfortable leaving him knowing he had a fever or was suffering. Also, is it even possible to sleep train for a wakeup that early in the morning? Will it teach him to sleep in? Or will it just mean 3 hours of crying every morning?
