@cvbee: that's funny...my doc was not impressed with me when I had told her that my LO was eating solids already at his 6 month appointment. She follows the provincial guidelines to a t. I do agree that it's interesting to compare with ped recommendations in the states. Like, my doc would never make any recommendations about sleep training and eating in the nighttime. All she cares about is if he's growing and healthy.

@autumnlove: I've mixed BM and formula plenty of times!

@Sammyfab: Hey neighbour! :) yeah, docs don't always follow the provincial guidelines (for example, most of the docs around here seem to give the go-ahead for solids before 6 months, where as the provincial guideline is formula or breastmilk exclusively til 6 months). I always find it interesting to compare all sorts of health guidelines here vs the states. Makes me realize which ones are 'really' important. (Like, if both places say the same thing).

I would totally mix the formula and breast milk together. You could even do that to help ease the transition to the formula taste. And it might be easier on digestion too since formula can be more constipating.

Do you guys mix formula with breast milk? I have some bags of milk that are only 4 ounces....will it be ok to mix with 2 ounces of formula?

@cvbee: I'm in ON too and my doctor recommended holding off cow's milk until a year.

I would also stretch the BM for as long as possible!

I would supplement whole cow milk. I'd have to look into it again, but I'm pretty sure by around 9 months you can do cow milk according to recommendations here in Ontario, Canada. Yep, just confirmed it.

My ped has said that it's much better to stretch BM as long as possible so it's better to supplement than to do EBF for a shorter amount of time.

I would start introducing formula now. That way she can get used to it a little at a time instead of all at once. I've heard that some babies reject it when trying to switch cold turkey. I wouldn't think it would be an issue, but I'd rather not risk it.

You could introduce a bottle of formula a day to make your stash last until her birthday. That way she can get all the benefits of breast milk and doesn't have to switch to entirely formula at once.

I am almost fully weaned and I probably have enough frozen breast milk for feedings up til mid/late November. LO doesn't turn 1 until the end of the year....should I try to stretch the frozen milk until Dec and give her a couple of formula bottles a day? Or should I just use up the breast milk and then feed with formula until we start cow's milk?
