@delight: We ended up not swaddle weaning after I wrote this, but we swaddle weaned before Thanksgiving for naps and after Thanksgiving for nighttime sleep. It went SO well. I kinda wish I had done it sooner. We didn't have any rough nights at all due to the swaddle weaning (our rough nights have been due to the 4-month sleep regression). I could tell she was ready because she was busting out of every swaddle anyways. She now wears a zipadee zip for naps and at night and she loves it (so do I!).

@lawbee11: how did swaddle weaning go? I still haven't yet at 4 months. L's sleep has gone straight downhill this week and I'm scared to make it worse!

Has anyone kept swaddling past 4 months?

@.twist.: Yay! That's exciting! M keeps gagging on her hand (because she tries to shove the entire thing into her mouth) and she often spits up because of it, so I am nervous to leave an arm out.

@JoJoGirl: hm. That makes sense. I guess I'm concerned he's going to just keep lifting his head ... But the sleep cues and white noise.... That all makes sense. Thanks.

@.twist.: Hmm, what do you mean? We don't really do tummy time anymore because LO now just rolls whenever she feels like it... and the 'sleep cues' don't happen with tummy time (ie sleep sack, white noise, darkness, in the crib vs. out in the living room on a playmat for tummy time) so I don't think they'll mix them up.

@grizz: I just saw your response! Was C rolling, or did you decide to wean for other reasons? M has busted out of her swaddle the past few nights. I would love to wean, but she is so obsessed with her hands and I worry that she'll lie there sucking on her hands and flailing about and won't fall asleep. Did C's sleep improve immediately or did it take a few days?

Oh Lordy, swaddle weaning! Bane of my existence right now. I watched on the monitor as E burst out of her swaddle at 3am this morning and waved her arms about like she was at a rave. Sigh. I have her napping unswaddled because, lets face it, her naps can't get any worse but she really isn't ready to sleep unswaddled at night. I guess we will just keep trying every few days and when she is ready it will click, right?

@Alivoo01: we didn't do CIO as she was only 9 weeks! I just nursed her back to sleep every time she woke up. Not sure if that's the best method but after about a week she went back to sleeping long stretches.

Sorry to thread jack, but when y'all swaddle wean and your LO cries, do you do the same techniques as CIO for sleep training or how do you soothe your LO so that s/he goes to sleep??

K hated being swaddled. We weaned pretty early. I want to say 8 weeks? Have you considered doing one arm out, then both arms out, perhaps starting with naps? The first 2 nights swaddle-weaning were the roughest, but then we had less wake-ups.

DS hasn't found his thumb either, and is a total wiggle worm in his swaddle. He'll be 90 degrees from where I put him down. And since he doesn't suck on his thumb, he can't self soothe and gets uber PO-ed when there's nothing to suck on. However, his arms and legs still flail around like crazy uncontrollably so we stay swaddled. He doesn't roll over yet.

@lawbee11: I have pretty much given up completely on naps as a time for me to get anything done. Today's naps including an hour and fifteen minutes of her nursing/sleeping on the boob while I watched tv, a couple of stroller naps outside, and her waking up when I started to think about putting her down. Thankfully she has JUST started stroller napping. Today I even stopped in a park and ate a treat from Starbucks with TWO hands. You, me, and cherrybee seem to have the same baby.

We switched C to the magic sleep suit for that reason. She seemed to be waking herself up fighting the swaddle. The magic sleepsuit lets her get at her hands but they don't flail about. But, I don't know if its related at all, but her naps have gotten even worse than they were before. Night sleep is fine but I'm wondering about going back to the swaddle for day.

You could try one arm out for a few days and see how it goes - that way she can find her thumb if need be? We had one arm out for 2 weeks because we were too scared to take the other arm out. Then she started rolling so we ditched it altogether.

@lawbee11: Madeline definitely did it! She was also a champion at busting out of her swaddle. I think it's pretty normal. Is she a thumb sucker? I found M could self soothe so much better once she had access to her hands. There's no harm in trying it!!

@sslm: She's only rolled tummy to back. I am just worried that she's not getting enough quality sleep because of all the fighting she's doing to try and break free, but I'm not sure if it's common for swaddled babies to wrestle around like that.

LO is 12 weeks old and I swaddle her for naps and at night. She sleeps pretty well at night with the swaddle and she hasn't rolled in her swaddle yet, but I often wake up to her grunting and moving around as if trying to break free (her eyes are closed during this so I assume she's asleep?). Sometimes this goes on for an hour straight. Is that normal?

I worry about swaddle weaning, though, because she is obsessed with her hands (they are in or near her mouth all the time). She's also gagged and spit up on several occasions after trying to shove both fists in her mouth. So I worry she won't be able to fall asleep/stay asleep with her hands free.

Any advice?
