I would wash all the onesies and blankets and things you KNOW you will use... I use any free and clear detergent (dreft has perfumes)... I would keep tags on any "nice" outfits because you never know if you will end up using them or not. If you plan on going out and using it the next day you can always pull the tags and wash them quickly the night before. You will be up anyway ;)

I hung a lot of things in the beginning but now I hang nothing! I think it would be different for a girl (obviously you have to hang dresses and skirts) but with a boy it's so much easier to fold things.

Thank you all for the great information! I really didn't think about washing them until all of you ladies said...I suck! lol Also, good to know about the detergents because I probably wouldn't have thought of that either!
Thank you again!

@Crumbs: before I had my lo I thought she'll be so tiny, how can she make that much laundry. But wow was I wrong. Doesn't help that we cloth diaper.

Since we're not at the new house yet I've only washed newborn and 0-3 clothing. The rest I still kept the tags on.
I've got clothes up to 18 months (clearance!) so I'm not washing everything right away.

I make our own laundry detergent so I'm using that.

I just pulled some stuff out that I bought last year and my son is only getting around to wearing now. Having the tags on it reminded me to wash it, whereas I might have forgotten without the tags.

That's good info about Dreft...I use All Free and Clear.

I took the tags off of everything and washed it before baby was born. I hung all sweaters, dresses, and shirts. Onesies, sleepers and pants were put in her dresser drawers.

We were given a few super cut outfits that weren't seasonably appropriate for her (she was born in the fall, but it snowed the week after she was born.) Obviously, I didn't wear the size 3 month sundress on her! I foolishly had taken the tag off of the dress, and wasn't able to return or exchange it after I realized my mistake (which wasn't until after DD was home from the hospital!) Oops!

FYI, Dreft is a great product but it's not fragrance-free or dye-free. If you want to be extra sure, I'd use a free & clear brand of detergent.

I would take the tags off all the newborn and 0-3 month stuff and wash it with sensitive/baby detergent. You can always sell the clothes to thrift stores or craigslist, or regift, if she doesn't wear them.

LO isn't here yet, but I took tags off and washed everything before we even knew the gender. The only pieces I didn't wash are the larger ones 9+ months, or if they were very girly. Since we found out the gender, I'll bought more pinks and washed those as well.

Doing the laundry will be the last thing I want to do once LO arrives.

I vote no. I would only washed the sizes that your LO is going to wear next (eg. 0-3 before birth, 3-6 when she outgrew them). My LO was soooo chubby, she actually didn't fit into some of the clothes (head opening too small or just too tight, etc.) so some of her new clothes went unworn until I got smart and just pulled tags and washed as she grew into them. Plus, some things I thought she would wear all the time (cute tops, jackets), I never put on her cause it looked uncomfortable or it was too cumbersome to wear.

AND, my LO was sensitive to the detergent we initially used so we had to re-wash EVERYTHING that I had already washed pre-delivery.....not fun.

My advice is to wash the 0-3 stuff and then as you get into the swing of things, you'll better know what process works for you. You may not be able to return them but you can re-gift them or sell them on craigslist.

@aMohror: I just wash a little at a time, that way it's not so overwhelming. Before she came I did up to 6 months, and then when I think she's going to be in a new size soon I'll stick them in the wash.

I know obviously if I plan on returning any items I need to keep the tags...but for the stuff I know I won't be taking back, things I've had for quite some time and can't take back anyway should I keep the tags on? To me it seems to make more sense to just cut them all off, that way I can take sets apart and put them where they go, and also, when baby comes am I really going to want to be cutting the tags off in the mornings?!

Also, what did you decide to hang/fold?

What's your thoughts ladies?! What did/have you done?

Thank You!
