@scg00387: i didn't really conscientiously switch - sometimes she just doesn't get too sleepy until later in the morning and if her nap just happens to be long, then thats it! we still try for 2 naps a day, but kind of go with the flow. sounds like he is ready to go to 1 nap/day though!

@Mrs. Confetti: interesting... I think I'd lose my mind if he did this 3-4 times a week! I don't know why since he is happy the whole time but I hate that he has been awake so long!

@HLK208: if I move the first nap up he just skips the second one :/

I guess it's not that unheard of to go to one before a year? Oy. I feel like I ought to suck it up and try not putting him down until 11 and see what happens.

My girl dropped to one nap at around nine months, she just kept pushing her second nap later and later so we took the plunge.

I generally put A down for her nap about four hours after her morning wakeup and she sleeps for 1.5-3 hours.

As for nursing, I nurse Miss A at 7, 9ish and I nurse her to sleep for her nap. She then nurses 2 or 3 times in the afternoon, including nursing to sleep at bedtime.

What about moving his first and second nap? Maybe try keeping him awake until 10:30 and moving the second to 2:30? Then your DH can get some time with him too.

DD is 16 months and just transitioned to the one nap even though she was fighting it for awhile but ideally that one nap HAS to be 1-2 hours or else she is over tired. When she fought the second nap when she was younger, she was only sleeping 30-45 minutes which was disastrous.

I've heard that you should wait til they fight their 2nd nap at least 3-4 times a week (if you want to preserve it, that is...).

If you switch to one nap, the common rec I believe is 5 hrs of wake time on either side of the nap...

I'm in the same boat. DS will be 1 year in a couple of weeks and has been on 1 nap a day (12:30 - 1:30/2) at daycare. At home he had been on two solid naps a day (10a & 3p). For the last couple of weeks he's been refusing the last nap at home. I think I'm going to try and push the morning nap later and keep my fingers crossed. He seems ok with 1 nap at daycare and the long awake times.

I had always thought he'd be able to stay up later in the morning and that would be my cue to drop the 2nd nap. Babies are confusing.

@chopsuey: he gets up usually at 6:30 but it's not surprising if he wakes at 6 or 7.. his first nap is usually 3 hours after he wakes.

@SleepyMonkey: when do you think you'll just switch over?? I feel like a bad mom for even considering it, I don't know why... bleh!

My LO is low sleep needs too. She has done a few one nap days and actually been ok. Like an 11-2 nap and she is good to go for the rest of the afternoon. She is 11 months now.

My friend's 9 month old is on 1 nap. If your DS is refusing his nap I would experiment with 1 and see how it goes .

What time does he wake up?

LO is 10 months. Has always been low sleep needs. We've been doing 2 naps for a long time and it was working great- roughly around 9:30 and 1:30 give or take an hour depending on when he woke up..

Twice in the past week he has flat out refused his second nap and succeeded despite my best efforts. Today was the second time - he napped 9:45-11 and then was asleep by 6:20. He was happy as a clam the entire afternoon/evening.

DH gets frustrated when he gets home and it's basically time for dinner and bath and I feel bad/guilty that LO has been awake for so long.

Should I just take the plunge and not put him down for his first nap until later?? How late? Do I nurse him before I put him down then? Ack!

I'm scared to mess with things, our nurse/sleep/eat schedule was so easy for a while!
