I don't see the problem with them being used during the lunch hour, but they should be banned from being used in classrooms!

I agree with @Mrs. Tricycle. We have BYOD where I work and although it's never going to be perfect, we have to teach the kids to learn in the real world. Like I heard someone say... for some kids school is like getting on a plane! Turn off and stow your electronic devices for the remainder of the day. This is not helping them.... You just have to try and teach kids to use the technology responsibly.

Kids use them for entertainment, not education. This is something that needs to be handled at the classroom/teacher level. If I had a class, I'd expect the sound to be off and would confiscate phones if I saw them being used. If you're trying to hide the text from your teacher, it's not important!

I am against outright "banning" on more "petty" issues such as phones (banning guns, I understand - phones?? well...).

I feel that when a ban is put on things, it causes kids (even some adults) to rebel, break the rules or have even worse attitudes than they may have before. I feel like too many rules is the breeding ground of rebellion. Obviously there should be a strict no cell phone use during class rule enforced, but I know it's hard than it sounds.

I don't have an answer, but I don't think a ban will fix the problem.

@artbee: that is so sad and awful! I can't believe they wouldn't let you call your mom.

I had a cellphone starting as a sophomore in high school but don't remember using it all the time. Text messages wasn't in yet (no unlimited text plan and i think we had only 200 per month haha). My high school was really strict... The cellphone couldn't be out during school hours or else it would be confiscated. I remember one time my last class got out 3 minutes early. I. Took my phone out and was walking towards the school exit and got reprimanded because it was in my hand and the last bell hadn't rung yet.

I don't know if it should be banned.

I do think maybe punishment of some sort so kids learn to put them on vibrate or turn them off. I think they need consequences for the disruption to the class. Maybe a warning and then detention if it happens often. (Is that harsh?) I think they should be able to use it during free time like lunch and study hall. I think promoting the responsibility of owning a cell phone is better than banning.

I know with iphones you can put it on vibrate but alarms will still go off. So what about asking for kids to show you that it is turned off and maybe collect them at the front of the desk for safe keeping. Or asking them to put their phone in their locker.

I would be fine with a policy where the kids had to drop the phone off before school started and they could pick it up after it has ended. I agree parents can reach children by calling the office.

This is a tangent, but adults are often guilty of the same behaviour, especially during meetings. I can't tell you how many times I'd be speaking and people are checking emails on their Blackberries. There is no way to be discreet about it either. It's just so rude.

I had a cell phone junior and senior year of high school, and it wasn't much of a distraction for me. Of course this was before people had smart phones, and texting wasn't very popular. I only used it after school ended to call my dad to pick me up or inform him that I had to stay late.

High school and technology is very different now. I would vote to ban phones from school. Cell phones didn't always exist, and people survived. They do need to bring back pay phones in order to give students a way to communicate with parents when needed. I don't even know if students now know what a pay phone is... oye.

@mrbee: LOL...Doesn't work that well. The school that I work in is...How can I say this lightly...Uh, ghetto. Luckily, the kids like me so they just grumble a little bit and put their phones away. But they have no self-control. If they receive a text, they can't help it - they HAVE to check. But I totally put my foot down with phone calls. I often answer the calls for them, very rudely. The students are mortified.

Controlling the whole phone-thing is very very hard to do. Every year, I try to come up with a fool proof way to keep them away but it almost never works. Drives me nuts.

Smartphones are a fabulous learning tool. Yes, they can be a distraction in the classroom if they're not properly managed, but there are so many ways to use them as an instructional device that it's a shame to ban them outright. Every kid with an iPhone has a computer in their back pocket that includes Internet, a multi-media production studio, reference books like dictionaries and atlases, and study tools like flashcards. The Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) model has a lot of merit in classrooms, especially when the school can't afford to provide this kind of technology to every student. As a junior high school librarian, I can't say enough about the potential. Obviously, I have colleagues that would disagree, but I find more and more teachers moving towards this mindset.

Yes. We managed without them, and if there's an emergency parents can call the school.

Although I did have one issue where a phone would have been nice. The last week of school I had a horrible migraine, so I raised my hand to go call my mom and go home and my teacher said no, they won't let me go home because it's the last week so they're being strict because a lot of kids skip then. So I said I was going to the bathroom and went to the office anyway and she was right, they wouldn't even let me call my mom. I went to the pay phone even though we aren't allowed to use it during class and called my mom in tears. She of course called the office right away and said she was picking me up.

Absolutely during class hours. If the parent needs to reach the kid all they have to do is call the school. I understand wanting your kid to have a phone if they stay for after school activities... But there is no reason they need to access it during classes.

YES! I'm a high school teacher and the number of disruptions they cause is ridiculous. I HATE it when parents tell me they need to contact their child. IF you need to call your kid, call the school and your kid will be called to the office!

Students text each other all day, it's terrible! On the first day of school, I tell the kids that they get one warning to put it away but the next time they are caught using it, it becomes mine and their parents will have to come to school to pick it up.

I was amazed to see that this is an issue in school today. Kids are saying it's unfair to have their phones confiscated. Parents are saying that they need to be able to reach the kids.

I'm sorry, but what about the needs of a kid's education? Doesn't that take precedence over the needs of parents and kids?

Maybe I'm missing something though. What do you guys think: should iPhones and other cell phones be banned in school pre-college?
