Maternity leave is more for preparing and recovering from actual birth. You can commence it prior to baby being born if you wanted or were having more serious medical issues but didn't qualify for disability. Parental leave is 35 weeks that can be used anytime in the first year that you have a biological child or adopted child placed with you. During this time most people are eligible to receive employment insurance benefits up to $485/week, and some employers will top up, and my employer allows you to have an additional year off with no pay, but they must provide you with an "equivalent position of no less responsibility or compensation" upon my return.</p> <p>In our case, I'm likely going back to work next month 17 weeks maternity leave, and ~20 weeks parental leave. Then my husband will commence his parental leave for the remaining 15 weeks, and his employer tops up to 93% of his salary.
