@danda: thanks, I didn't realize that! I'm not too knowledgeable about what is/isn't contagious and the window of contagious etc.

According to my thermometer's manual a rectal temperature of 100.4 and up is a fever and my son's temp this morning was 100.01 so I'm guessing that is a low-grade fever/not a fever? He has not felt hot to the touch since we took his temp this morning and is in much better spirits, especially after his first nap. We'll probably keep him home tomorrow just to make sure his immune system had bounced back!

My LOs fevers are always higher in the afternoon/evening. If she was 100F in the morning and a few days into antibiotics I would probably send her if her temp dropped by the afternoon and stayed low for evening and tomorrow morning. The germs are already at daycare so I wouldn't worry about that but I wouldn't allow my LO around other kids for a while.

I agree with the others (fever free 24 hours) but wanted to comment on your concern for the other kids. Ear infections are not contagious - the virus that got the ears stuffed up in theorist place is contagious. So an ear infection without a fever is ok to send to daycare.

Thanks everyone! Seems the consensus is to keep him home. Will do!

I would probably keep him home to rest and make sure he gets enough feedings in to get hydrated. Fevers causes dehydration. Hope your LO feels better soon. It's so hard when they are so little. Get some rest and hydrate yourself too.

I would send him if he was fever free for 24 hours, but a 100 this morning would make that a no.

I would probably keep him home one day...even a mild fever means their immune systems are working overtime and I would be afraid he would more susceptible to other things...especially with as bad as the flu has been this year. I would give the meds one more day to work.

I would see how he does today and make the decision later tonight or tomorrow morning. Now that he's on meds, he may show significant improvement today.

I would probably keep him home one more day If his fever is still up. If it's under 100, I usually send H, just so I don't blow my sick days.

DS is almost 6 months old and since starting daycare has had about three colds. He's only had a fever once so the other two times we sent him to daycare. He started showing symptoms of a cold on Tuesday but didn't have a fever. By the time I picked him up Thursday afternoon he had spiked a fever and had a horrible cough to go along with his runny nose. Needless to say, he stayed home on Friday. He kept spiking a fever on Friday so we took him to the doctor Saturday morning and she said it was a possible sinus infection/ear infection. (It was hard for her to tell about his ears because he has a lot of wax, I guess!)

anyway, she prescribed amoxicillin and he's had two doses so far. He had a fever last night before he went to bed but when we checked this morning it was down to 100 (not fever range, rectally).

Sooooooo.....after all that, my question is, should we take him to daycare tomorrow? He needs to be fever free for 24 hours, which he may be but bc of the horrible cough and his general misery I'm not sure what to do? I don't want the other kids to catch anything (although it may be too late now and they may already have?) and I don't want to exacerbate his situation but he already missed Friday so I'm not sure!

What would you do?
