Oh, that's too bad. I wouldn't worry too much though. It's still early, and you can try again later. We didn't do bottomless. The week before potty training we went to Target w/ DD and bought her Elmo undies and My Little Pony undies. She was so excited about those, that part of the success of potty training came from allowing her to wear her undies. She was pretty unfazed by wetting her pants, so I thought it all might be a no-go, but she figured it out in the end.

@skibobrown: Oh good for you!!! We did but it ended badly... We had to stop by 1.5 days because LO wouldn't pee in the potty, and he pee in his pants 2 minutes afterwards. He was very traumatized everytime he wets his pants, at one point I was worried he wouldn't even pee in the diapers so we stopped. He screamed and cried everytime he pees even after I put him back in his training diapers and explained to him he won't wet his pants anymore. Did you literally do it bottomless? Or with underwear?

Did you do it? I just saw this thread. We used the long weekend for potty training. The first day I was worried that it wasn't working at all, but day 2 and 3, everything clicked. Our daughter also showed only some signs of readiness (I'd say fewer signs of readiness than your son). It turns out though that Elmo undies and gummy candies as potty treats are a huge motivator.

I would say go for it, as long as you are prepared. Meaning, you will be ok if it doesn't go as smoothly as you hope. We tried potty training my DS over a long weekend around the same age (which is the age my DD got potty trained) and we threw in the towel after a day after I realized he wasn't ready and I didn't want to fight him over it. We waited until a few months ago at age 32 months he was complaining about wet diaper, asking to wear underwear, etc. and it was as easy as can be. Good luck!

Thank you everyone!!! Now I am leaning toward not training this coming weekend... but we'll still buy some underwear and let him put it on.

@NaturallyCathy: Oh how good to know that I am not alone! Hugs!!

@MamaCate: Thanks! Our next class will be 2.5 years old to 3. According to my friend (her DS is moving up to the next class on July 1), they will only allow underwear and no more diapers. For us we still haven't heard anything in terms of advancing. So I was like, shoot, I should really step it up and train DS then, but my friend said, no, they will do it for you! So I assume the next class is hard core potty training, but your LO needs to show enough readiness to advance... And you are right about Labor Day! I am just a bit antsy because I don't want DS to be stuck in this class forever...

@birdofafeather: @Arden: I am a tad bit worried that I was the reason LO wasn't ready! A friend of mine her DD doesn't go to school until recently (they always have nannies) when she turns 3. And she didn't potty train her the entire time and the school was a bit upset about it. So last time I heard it was very hard for her to train her DD because she was so used to peeing in her diaper. I am a bit afraid if I keep dragging my feet I'd end up there... but the lazy part of me is hoping one day he'd be ready on his own... which I don't know if it will happen or what it means, really! Yes, I am a woman of conflict. lol

@Andrea: Love the potty watch idea, thank you!!

@lemondrop: It sounds like you guys are doing really well! And thanks for sharing that story about training while not ready (and the chaos that comes with it).

@looch: I dislike the 3 day method too! especially LO's room (where all the toys are) is carpeted!!

No I wouldn't train at this time, but I am not on board with the thee day method. Instead, I just brought him at timed intervals and we didn't have him running around peeing all over the place (not my style).

eta: when we trained, my son was already 3 and it was super easy. We didn't train earlier because we had a long airplane ride coming up and I didn't want to go back and forth between pull ups and underwear. So we waited until the trip was over and we were acclimated back to our time zone. It took a few days.

I think you have some promising signs that he could be trained. I trained my daughter (at around the same age) and she didn't even have all of those signs so I think you never know until you give it one hard push. Maybe he could benefit from the "potty watch". You set it to beep at intervals so that tells him to go. I did not "force" my daughter to go at all. When the watch beeped, I would ask her if she wanted to go, and if she said no I didn't push it. She has a very stubborn personality so it was best that she felt in control of when she needed to go. She had a few accidents because she held it in too long, but she quickly learned after the first day and we didn't have any accidents after day one!

I would not. He doesn't sound like he wants to, so forcing him won't likely work. It's not about his age, it's about his readiness.

Mine is the same age, and we are waiting a few more months. He has shown a couple signs of getting more ready (waking up dry, wanting training pants over diaper) but he's fighting sitting on the potty, so I'm not pushing it, just keeping it fun. He comes into the bathroom with us any time we go, gets a sheet of tp, gets to flush, then we wash hands. When he tells us he pooped, he gets an M&M. Lots of talking about it, but no pressure to go all out on training yet.

Last year my nephews were the same age and going through it, we were on vacation in the same house during it... it was chaos. They weren't ready until right around 3 years old, I have zero interest in repeating that experience right now. It's amazing how much they change in just a few months.

i said other because why force the issue if you/he REALLY doesn't want to? i mean, if you want to do it, go for it and commit, but if not, then wait a month or so and reassess!

@irene: What would happen if you planned to wait until Labor Day? It is still warm, it gives you a goal, and you could try to prep LO a little bit beforehand?

LO did well with the 3 day method and only had a few accidents but we did have some battles over hand washing, of all things. I was tired and drained by the end of the weekend but it is so nice not to deal with diapers (we did cloth) anymore!

As far as being worried, I would not be worried. The developmental guidelines I am familiar with say that as long as a child is potty trained by 3, not to worry. You may want to clarify with school the expectations for the next class as well. My LO just moved up to the 2/3s room and is potty trained. She is now 2 1/2. But several of her classmates who are a few months older are definitely still in diapers and it did not stop them.

Can you schedule a conference if it is hard to catch the lead teacher?

@locavore_mama: I am with you.... sometimes I feel like it is my fault that he isn't ready.

The july 4 weekend can be as quiet as I want it to be, but the lazy part of me hates to ruin a perfectly nice weekend, with the potential that there will be pee and poo everywhere, a power struggle, and the crying spell. I just don't even know if I have what it takes to do it. So far forcing him to the toilet works only half the time, and he asks for a youtube choo choo train video. So he'd be watching videos for 3 days straight? I don't know.

I would wait a little bit and ask his teachers. You should let him pick out some underwear so he gets excited!

My LO is 2.5 and day trained but she still wakes up wet after overnight sleep!

We used the 3 day training, stickers. Elmo book & DVD.

I wish I had experience here but we're pretty much in the same camp. DS is about 2 years, 5 months as well and we're getting lots of mixed signals. But I blame a lot of it on baby sister (13 m younger) ;)

He'll tell me after the fact that he's dirty and has no problem staying dirty
Will pull pants and diapers on/off by himself sometimes
Tell me if he's had an accident when we do diaper free tim
Has sucessfully peed and pooped in the potty
Knows the Daniel Tiger song about "If you have to go potty..."
Has big boy underwear but no desire to keep it dry
Knows how to open the bathroom door to go potty/ has his potty seat in easy reach
Doesn't announce when he needs to pee or poop
Denies being wet or dirty even though he obviously is

This is such a hard time for us! And it drives me crazy. Big hugs momma! We'll get through this together :)

@MamaCate: Thanks for the advice and pointing me to the Elmo DVD!

They claim they help them at school, but just as an "introduction", unless if they ask to go. So there is no rush in his class to make them go in the potty, where as the next class up, there will be no more diapers but only underwear, I heard.

Good point, I will ask the teachers... the thing is the lead teachers leave so early and I seldom see them! Grr...

I just hate to wait and winter will come again, and it will be so hard to potty train then...

I say, sure, why not. What's the worst worst that can happen?

LO is 26m and has been doing essentially the same for months. The only reason, I think, *she* isn't fully potty trained is because I've been to lazy to give it the final push. We're going out of town this weekend but when we come back I plan to keep her home on a Friday and give it a final push.

Since its a holiday weekend will you be out and about or will it be a quiet weekend? I will say from what I've read on the 3 day method, the key to success is no distractions for you. It's on us the parent to take them frequently!

P. S. LO is in the 2 room and a lot of her classmates are already potty trained.

Also I think of night time potty train as a completely separate entity!

@irene: I would wait, or at least talk to his teachers at school about his readiness. Are they working on it at all there? We did 3 day potty boot camp at 27 months and it helped that the teachers felt LO was ready. They encouraged the children to try and LO regularly came home reporting multiple successful potty times in a day.

One thing they did at school was just to put the kids on the potty every 30 minutes to try to "catch" a pee or poop and that seemed to help build some confidence.

Also, LO was motivated to get underwear and be a big girl like her friend in her class who is older and trained early. That helped me feel like she was ready.

You could certainly try it, and there isn't another 3 day weekend for a little while, but it might be a power struggle based on what you described. If you do go for it, Elmo Potty Time DVD was indispensable for us and we still recite and cite the information and songs to help LO.

Hope that helps!

I need advice!!!

Long weekend is coming up, and I am contemplating doing the 3-day potty training thing. My son is 2 years 5 months old. However, he doesn't seem to be really ready. Please help me decide if it would be a waste of time or if I should give it a try:

Ready signs:
- He could pull his pants / training diaper up and down, IF he wants to
- He peed and pooped in the potty many times over the past half a year. So he knows what it is for
- He does notify us when pee and poo is coming

Not Ready / Tricky signs:
- He never really wakes up with a dry diaper
- He always poop (and announce he's pooping) when he is eating a meal, making it difficult to take him to the bathroom (he wouldn't hold for it)
- Dirty diaper NEVER BOTHERS HIM. ARGH!!
- Recently he regressed, and I haven't really seen him pee in the potty. He also poop in the diaper without telling me.
- When he "announces" he needs to go, and I ask him if he wants to go to the potty, he would say NO 99.5% of the time.
- He definitely doesn't want to go to the potty when he's doing something, such as playing. It will be a meltdown if I make him go.
- Nothing really motivates him to use the potty: stickers or food. He likes it, but it just doesn't seem like he cares for it, or understand the "cause/effect"
- My fault: I still haven't bought underwear for him.
- Over the past half a year, he asked to go to potty, and successfully went, maybe 1-2 times. He normally NEVER asks to use the potty no matter how many times I explain to him he should.

I don't know. What are your thoughts?

Is it my fault that he is still not ready? Should I just force him to go on the potty even though he says no?

Do you think I should just give it a few more weeks/months? If you think it is OK to give him a crash course over the weekend, do you have any tips for me for a success?

Or really, any tips to help him become more ready would be highly appreciated!

ETA: I have 3 mommy friends and all of us have same age tots (birthdays only within 1+ week apart). The 2 girls are basically potty-trained (would ask to go to bathroom, motivated by candy...etc), and the boy (we go to the same daycare) has shown a lot more ready signs than LO. He recently moved onto the next class, ie. the potty training class, while we are still in the same class. I don't know, should I worry?
