I wouldn't want to lock the door either in case of an emergency.

You would have to make sure to kid proof all the major things like your stove knobs, though, once your child is able to roam out of their rooms. Another reason why I would want to keep the crib for as long as possible.

locking the door isn't such a great idea, especially if there is an emergency.

@Rubies: he turned the stove once when he was maybe 15 months? i left the safety cover off and found the gas on! we have safety covers on the knobs, but they're pretty flimsy and i think he could get them off.

i used to be afraid of charlie drowning in the toilet too. for a while he would put his hands in the toilet water all the time so i bought toilet locks, but never got around to installing them.

@Mrs. Bee: Does he know how to turn on the stove? Your kid is a genius! LOL...I morbidly imagine my LO drowning herself in the toilet! ACK! I even want to lock her in now! And she's only 6months old. Heh.

@Rubies: i read that mrs. hide and seek puts a lock on her daughter's room, and that's what we were planning on doing too. i don't want charlie wandering around unsupervised and turning on the oven and things like that!

@Mrs. Bee: I laughed out loud at "...he'll just pound on the door if he's free." I picture a frustrated Charlie pounding using both fists yelling, "Let me out! Let me out!"

Do you lock him in his room? My friend has a 3-year old and they have a lock on the door and lock him in because they're afraid he'll wander out in the middle of the night and hurt himself. Is this the norm?

@looch: we kept him in his crib this weekend. i don't think it's a good time to transition when he's fighting bedtime, because he'll just pound on the door if he's free. on saturday night i held his hand through the crib and sang lullabies until i put myself to sleep haha. on sunday he half cried for a couple minutes before going to sleep.

i want to keep him in his crib for another 6 months if possible! but when his sleep is good again, we'll revisit making the switch.

So what did you decide?

I want to keep my son in his crib until he's like 4! No seriously, as long as possible. I don't trust him to stay in bed the whole night. We'll deal with the wandering out of the room issue with a gate in his bedroom doorway, that much is for sure.

@artbee: i would want to keep my LO in it as long as possible, too. i don't want her waking up in the middle of the night and leaving the bed to come into my room. it seems like that starts happening since they have a sense of freedom? i dunno but this is what my friends with older kids have been telling me.

Rob Sr. keeps asking me the same thing and I say "never".... RJ is still in sleep sacks so he's never really been able to try to climb out of his crib. I intend on keeping him in a crib as long as possible, but he has been fighting bedtime lately as well! We had to let him cry the past two nights. He only cried for 5 mins each night, but he starts crying the second we lower him into the crib.

We've tried pushing his bedtime to between 7 and 7:30, and that helped with the bedtime routine battles, but now he's crying. Kinda stinks but I just can't imagine him not in a crib-- he rolls around all night long and I feel like I'd have to go in and re-cover him a million times a night.

I've always heard when they climb out of the crib it's time for a big kid bed. @Mrs.bee: why do you want to keep him in a crib? Just curious!

@Rubies: Too funny that you mentioned that episode of Full House because I totally remember that too!! Who knew we'd be remembering it as we raise our own kids??

I don't really have advice, DD isn't to that point yet, but it sounds like maybe he is ready to transition into a toddler bed. Have you tried the Halo Sleepsacks for early walkers? They have holes for their feet.

I transitioned DS to a toddler bed at 1 1/2. He did really well with it too. It was nice to be able to lay down next to him and help him fall asleep. He was also excited because we redid his room and he got to pick it out.

i think when he wants to stop wearing his sleep sack and wants to start climbing out of the crib is an awesome time! (NOW!) lol. plus, i bet he'd LOVE the idea of sleeping in a "BIG BOY" bed now.

I remember the "Full House" episode when Michelle got her big girl bed because she climbed out of her crib and went into Uncle Jesse's room. I always thought that when LO could climb out of her crib, that meant she was ready for a bed. Charlie is growing up!!!

The past week it has taken Mr. Bee hours to get Charlie to go to bed. We were truly spoiled by 21 months of sleeping through the night. Now I think he's too smart and says he wants milk, to read more books, that he pooped, that he wants to take off his sleep sack. We've had to let him cry a couple of nights, and a couple of nights Mr. Bee fell asleep holding his hand through the crib slats.

One night when he wasn't wearing his sleep sack, he nearly climbed out of his crib until Mr. Bee stopped him. (He doesn't want to wear his sleep sack anymore!)

So we're considering moving him to a floor bed this weekend. Then we could read books with him, and maybe lay down for a little while before bedtime. I was hoping to keep him in his crib for as long as possible, but once your toddler can really talk, it's hard to ignore him!

When did you transition to a toddler bed?
