Lol, no. I'm all about expanding paid sick leave (or just banked "leave") for all employees, which women could then use for their periods, but I don't think a special menstral leave is a good idea.

Sounds like a wonderful idea in theory but I agree it's just not realistic. Maybe if a woman had severe cycles...but mine is (or was pre pregnancy) heavy and I cramped badly on the first two days but I could always work.

Also it would be awkward for everyone at work to know that you were on your period. :/

This is a total joke in my opinion and really ridiculous! If someone has extenuating circumstances that require missed work at that time of the month, I can see granting Them time off with a doctors note but that would have to be incredibly severe.

I have had menstrual leave in a contract before - one day a month. In my 3 years of working for that employer, nobody used it that I know of.

We also had unlimited sick leave (a policy that was nowhere near as abused as people would assume), so long as we didn't use more than 3 weeks consecutively, and had a med cert after 3 days, so if people did need to take a day off because of severe cramping/menstrual issues, that's what they used, as it is far less uncomfortable than saying to your usually male principal (this was in Japan where things are less progressive) that you're taking the day off for menstrual leave.

I am super pro ample and mandatory sick/medical leave, vacation time, parental leave etc, but I feel like for most women menstrual leave is not neccessary, and for the few where periods are that horrific, that is what sick/medical leave is for.

I think it's really silly. I agree that it will just deter people from hiring women.

We deal with periods every month from the time we are really young. It's life. Deal with it.

@ShootingStar: I agree. I can totally see males in charge of hiring thinking they don't want to hire a female employee who might take 1-3 days off every single month.

I feel like this will only harm women in the long run. There are employers who already would prefer men over women, especially over mothers. I think this would at the least be in the back of people's heads when hiring. I work at a pretty progressive company and our shady HR guy tried to get my boss not to hire me when I was pregnant, to which she told him that was illegal and ignored him. I imagine guys like that would just overlook the majority of female resumes.

I feel like I'm being anti-woman right now, but this kind of made me laugh like a "get out of gym class" kind of thing. I don't think women should be offered additional PTO because we get aunt flo once a month. My reasoning, 1) we can take pills *in most cases* that will elevate the pressure/discomfort. 2) women have been dealing with cramps for years, they go away after a day or two, it sucks, we hate it, but we can work through the pain or consult a doctor to help us manage them. 3) I feel like this would either be abused or not used (I can't see myself admitting to my boss I needed to take menstrual leave...I would be mortified and would rather take a sick day.

This is great. This is job security for women and keeps them in the workforce. I can see how a separate menstrual cycle policy is necessary for a an employee with insufficient PTO or works for a company with a rigid sick leave policy.

I have taken PTO for severe cramps and body aches. If PTO wasn't available I would have been miserable and unproductive at work. Now, I don't have as severe symptoms and an ibuprofen works, but there are women who suffer for a few days during that time of the month.
