@Mrs Green Grass: Oops, sorry i should have clarified. Yes, they left the Foster Farms raw chickens on the shelves.

@Freckles: Not the chickens they cooked, but raw Foster Farms chicken was implicated in the original problem.

@Mrs Green Grass: The article also states that they've put the chickens back on the shelf, putting the responsibility on the consumers. So wrong. We're getting our meat freezer packs from our local butcher today, thank goodness.

yuck. I pretty much have to force myself to eat chicken anyway, this might just seal the deal.

I understand all of the animal cruelty issues, but the article really shows how unsafe the industry itself is which is what is scary. Organic chicken can still be contaminated with salmonella and some of the newer strains are antibiotic resistant.

@TheSwissWifeStyle: agreed, this happens more often than we would like to think about. debeaking is also quite a revolting and standard practice in large factory farms...which is why I avoid them as much as possible. Hurts my heart! :(

@IRunForFun: That's what I'm thinking too. Super duper washing, cooking and deep deep cleaning the kitchen!!

@spaniellove: male chicks are "useless" so that's pretty much what happens to them.

In short, I'd say if you're going to eat any animal, you should definitely know where it's coming from and how it's being treated/prepared.

I haven't bought chicken ever since the last salmonella outbreak was posted, but I'm sure other meats aren't much safer unless they are free range and organic. There are also outbreaks in produce, etc, so at some point it's like...what CAN we eat? I'm just washing and overcooking everything and hoping for the best...

@mrs. bird: I know...I suppose all meat is processed somehow but I can eat something else until I get that image out of my head.

I think what little appetite I had left for chicken was gone after I saw the recent video supposedly of the chicks at the Bell and Evans plant being tossed into grinders still alive.

I'm already not a huge chicken-lover though I do eat a fair amount of chicken. This article totally freaked me out. Costco found salmonella even in their cooked chicken and they cook it to 180 degrees when the standard is 160. (They pulled all of the chicken.)
