@wrkbrk: he is SO excited about the robot sheets! We had already picked out the rug and storage bin when that happened. They don't quite coordinate perfectly but it will be a nice bright cheery (if slightly cramped) room.

@wrkbrk: Here is what we got:

Svärta loft bed
and we are using our white Kallax wall unit in the room too.

It's a pretty small room with white trim and light blue walls that were supposed to be a bit more of a grey blue but look closer to sky blue in the sunlight. We are going to outfit the closet but not put a dresser in because it's small and really meant to be his play room to keep his big boy toys away from his baby sisters expected this summer. We are going to put a recliner in there too. It's not going to match too well and is a bit large for the space but we ran out of space in the living room for it with the renovation, plus we want to be able to sit in a chair and read to him in his room.

Admittedly, I care a lot about my son’s room and am still not 100% satisfied with it. His room needs curtains and an area rug, but I will tackle that when we get him a big boy bed. This is a pic of my splurge wall- I absolutely love the wallpaper and LO stands in his crib to get a closer look. I bought the IKEA cube storage knowing that I would use them as bedside tables one day. The orange lamps, white frames are from IKEA, and art is from Etsy. The bolster pillow is front Target. This pic is from the MOTN, his room is a glorified upstairs playroom.

I have noticed more rooms on blogs or Pinterest with rooms painted 60-75% one color and the top white without molding. These rooms look fresh and modern.

@babycanuck: I think this is the one! https://www.homesquare.com/South-Shore-Spark-Storage-Bed-and-Bookcase-Headboard-in-Pure-White-3260B2.htm It's really nicely built overall, and I put it together with just the five-year-old helping me. The drawers are the only downside, sometimes the front comes loose... I think I may end up super-gluing them together.

@babycanuck: Got it! We are, too. Yours sounds like a great kid! Good luck letting him choose wall art. Sleep issues suck for sure, but I am a big believer in "American" baby sleep standards being too perfectionist anyway. Our DS slept in our room for 15 months then easily transitioned to his own room. He wasn't ready beforehand!

We didn't do much with his nursery as I know he would grow out of it quickly. Our crib was a cheap $99 one from IKEA. The changing table was an old IKEA dresser that we already had (we put a changing pad on top of it). So you can say we saved the money for his big boy room.

We did the big boy "transformation" around this time last year, when DS was 5. There is now a little love seat (from PBK) in front of the bed, and a lamp on the night stand but we never took another pic. I always intend to hang artwork on the wall which hasn't happened yet.

ETA: DH wanted a full bed for DS. This is the cheapest one from Land Of Nod (now Crate Kids) back then. The beddings are all sale/clearance items from Land Of Nod. The nightstands are old things we already have from Ikea. The dresser (on the bottom right) is also from ikea. DS picked the wall color and he wanted grey (amongst hundreds of wall paint color chips at the store). I love my boy so much lol

The room is never photo ready (tidy) so please pardon the mess :-)

@wrkbrk: lol you are right. Only because I had really bad hyperemesis and being high risk for twins before 35 - now being 36 I don’t want to chance it. I told my hubby if he really wants another I’ll deal with the illness, and if he e didn’t have infertility issues and conceived earlier I would have had another quickly. It’s just too hard for me. I have friends and family that were older with kids and that’s cool - just not right for me personally.

He’s been great with potty training and bed training for sure. Sleep training never worked, he was a late bloomer for crawling and walking. I’m hoping that having him pick out “big boy” art for the wall or something will also make him excited. My sister is an interior decorator but has crazy expensive taste and I have no style at all :silly:

@babycanuck: LUCKY MAMA!! I am dreading potty training. Ugh. Story for another day. Double and queen beds from IKEA are very low to the ground - I know bc I had one in law school haha. Your son sounds super smart; getting potty training so early and transitioning to a toddler bed no problem! Do I remember correctly that you all are also one and done? (If thread jacking, wall me :)).

@wrkbrk: he was actually ready to potty train in December. I tried around his birthday and he wouldn’t have it. Granted we have been putting him on the toilet when running the bath since about a year to try and pull a Pavlov lol by November he was telling us he had to go poop but not pee. Over Xmas break we did no pants at home for the week and he totally got it. I was surprised! I thought he wouldn’t be ready for another year.

He loves the toddler bed - he hates the crib, and instead of me cosleeping from exhaustion when he wakes up I walk him back to his room and he’s usually back asleep within five minutes of me sitting with him.

I’m most concerned about a bed - I want to get a double so it will last longer but also not be too high off the floor. I’m so curious about the one that @Mama Bird got because of the storage aspect.

@babycanuck: I love it! That looks so much like ours except for the flooring and window treatments. What do you want ideally? Do you have inspiration pics or ideas? If yes I bet I (we) could help you source it cheaply! Sometimes really small changes make a big difference. Also if you don't mind me asking - how is the toddler bed going? It sounds like your DS is more advanced - is he already asking to go potty on the potty?

@wrkbrk: for sure - we splurged last year to put an organizer in his closet and took the doors off. Any organization I can get in our overstuffed house helps. Trying to get rid of crap and be more minimalist but it’s hard.

@babycanuck: PS Sorry to get all over your thread here but I love the topic. Our walls are Revere Pewter from Benjamin Moore - every room in the house because I am lazy. It switches from a grey grey to a beige grey depending on the light. Everything in DS's room is from overstock, amazon, babies r us or etsy. No big dollar items here. The most expensive thing was probably his little white PBK table (gift). Can we see your son's current nursery?

@wrkbrk: I know right?? We converted his crib about a month ago, he will be 2.5 months next week 😭 I actually did it after we were away for a week and thought it would help with his sleeping issues. Has definitely helped - most nights if he wakes up it’s to go pee and then goes right back to sleep (finally...after way too long waking every 2-4 hours since birth).

His room is rectangular but one full wall is closet and another full wall is windows, plus the door on wall three so trying to figure out layout is the hardest part. I want to get a big boy bed but will likely do so later in the year. Toys have taken over the house LOL we literally took apart our dining room and made that the playroom.

Love your little one’s room, though!

@babycanuck: Big boy?! I remember when you had him! Ours is an intermediary room - DS will be 2.5 next month and I’m thinking it’s time to convert his crib. This wasn’t his first nursery (we moved) and serves as his playroom as well hence intermediary ... ETA it started off as a sky theme (clouds, moon, stars) and morphed into "all he cares about are vehicles" theme LOL.

We just raided IKEA last weekend for my son's new room but the construction isn't finished yet. I will try to remember to post when it's finished.

We haven't redone the whole room, but DS got a big boy bed with a shelf headboard. Definitely a win. He's stuffed all his favorite cars and trains onto the shelf, and even built a mini-garage in there. And he loves having all his clothes in drawers under the bed so he can reach in and pick what he wants.

We just did this for our son. Wall is grey with an accent wall of dark navy. We have natural wood furniture from ikea. It’s space themed so we have the moon light from ikea in the centre of the wall and we got star and planet decals from Etsy as well. I’d take a picture but it’s not finished yet!

I love all the beautiful Pinterest inspired rooms, but it’s so not our style! LO has a bed, bedding, rug, and toy storage from ikea. He loves it and it wasn’t expensive so we can replace down the road if needed.

I painted my son's wall art, nothing fancy, but it's large canvases with a hammerhead shark and a whale that I shamelessly copied from PBK. I think I spent something like $10 per canvas, PBK wanted $129 for a set of three or something like that.

I bought the bedding on clearance, sewed the valances and bought the bed from Costco. I don't have pictures, but basically, the only splurge was the blackout roller roman shades at $99 a piece.

I am itching to start redecorating my little guy's room to make it a big boy room but we just don't have the means right now. His wall colour is grey and I will probably keep it, but I can't help but constantly look at cute beds/bedding/wall decor and trying to figure out layout.

Show me pics of your big boy rooms and your best frugal options!
