@honeybear: You've given me lots to think about, thank you. We want a traditional lawn for the next few years because they're hard wearing for children's play, paddling pools, bouncy castles. We fully intend to take it up again once the children have grown.

@Cherrybee: Yes, it looks much nicer without all that stuff in there. Whatever you do, I am sure it's going to look gorgeous.

@looch: Haha! It didn't look like that a few days ago.... It looked like this:

Beautiful but not very useable for a young family! And a LOT of pruning!

@Cherrybee: You have my dream yard, I would leave it as is. I have the blackest thumb on the planet, though.

I guess I should begin by saying that I'm in a different climate than you, so I don't have specific plant recs. Find a reputable native plant nursery nearby, or get a book from the library on native plants, or both! I highly recommend native plants. Trying to grow exotics is usually highly resource-intensive and if you've got little children running around, you probably don't want to spray your garden with much other than the occasional shower from a garden hose.

Anyhow, so you're going to take out all of the pavers? I'd personally pick something other than turf grass as groundcover, mostly because I think it's a particularly uninteresting aesthetic and over here across the pond, it requires a lot of (really mind-numbing) maintenance. Is there maybe another low groundcover you could use? That looks like a small enough space that you could make it really awesome with a few additional trees, a bunch of nice shrubs, a few raised beds, and then a winding path back to the garage with low groundcover and some stepping stones through it. I'd personally go for maximum plants and minimum groundcover of any sort, because it isn't a huge space and I like plants (that aren't turf grass--nothing wrong with it in a ball field or on a golf course, but that's not the look I want in my backyard sanctuary, you know?). Pick shrubs and flowers that produce fruits and seeds that the local birds and butterflies/bees like, because it's fun to watch them hang out in your garden!

As for veggies, I do mine in raised beds. I would do that in your situation too, especially if you're new to veggie gardening, because amending soil is a lot of work. Look into square foot gardening to get a basic idea of how to set one up.

Especially if you grow veggies!

I need inspiration. We moved into our house a year ago. The garden is paved, but we intend to lay a lawn. It was full of big, overgrown plants - buddleia, lilac, roses etc. I spent the weekend digging them out - there is still a lot more clearing to do. DH is going to clad the hideous garage and lay decking by the house. I'm in charge of plants.....

Show me your garden please!
