I've hosted a few baby showers and a heartfelt thank you is all I need. I think the card and mugs would be great.

My shower isn't for a few months yet and I'm already stressed about what to do for hostess gifts...the thing with my family is so many people end up doing things/making things etc its hard to determine who to buy for. I can't possibly buy 12 gifts (that's how many people helped with my bridal shower). I ended up just getting my mom and sister a candle for my bridal shower because I noticed they put in the most work and gave me the least amount of grief. I'll probably end up doing the same thing for my baby shower. Oh I gave the gifts in private so no one felt left out, but everyone who helped a little got a thank you note of course!

I'm trying to figure this one out. There are two friends who are doing most of the work. My Mom and another friend are also helping. I was thinking of making them all a pack of everyday cards and maybe getting my two friends a little something extra - like a gc somewhere.... Just have to figure out where... @CameronsMomma: I think your idea about hot cocoa is a good one!
@babynumber1: oh, I like the idea of a plant, as well!
@katdevargas: I think my best friend would love homemade chai. I might need to make that for her...

I did a nice plant for the girls that threw my wedding shower, now I am searching for ideas for the baby shower... The plants are still in their houses and its nice to see something that they will keep around

@tequiero21: i think that's pretty fair and sounds like you have a great deal going with your brother. i just think in general that volunteering to throw a shower for someone else is a big deal because of all the work involved and gratitude needs to be shown to thank them, whether it is through a card or gift. a few girls are throwing me a shower and i'm so grateful for that. i plan to do the same when it's their turn. but i do plan on gifting them to show my gratitude (not sure what yet though)

I'm actually surprised it's not the norm. So much hard work and time goes into planning a baby shower. I think a Thank you card is a must and anything extra would be a bonus (especially if they threw your shower at a restaurant where it'll cost exceedingly more than at home). The people who end up throwing the shower is probably a very close friend or family member so I think they would appreciate any kind of gratitude.

I ended up going a similar but different route. I got each a clear coffee mug, put 3 Godiva chocolates in the bottom (caramel, milk and a dark), and then they went different paths. One cousin's has a peppermint and regular hot chocolate with a pack of Hello Kitty tissues (she adores HK). The other cousin has 2 peppermint hot chocolates, and a regular. And for my aunt I got her a pound of Starbucks Anniversary blend coffee. I think the three gifts came to 20$ after using a gift card I had, but they're really cute and I know it's the thought that counts more than anything.

@tequiero21: I think $100 is a lot for a hostess/host gift. I think the norm is closer to $25-$50, but I could be wrong. I've always seen things like goodie baskets and bath sets as hostess gifts, not too expensive at all.
But I like the coffee idea!

Sounds fabulous, I'm sure they will appreciate it. I didn't get anytime for the girls who hosted mine I just wrote them nice emails to thank them. I don't think anyone minded as it seems to be the norm, so the fact that you are even getting them something at all is great. Hot cocoa is always great, especially in this cold weather!

I think thats a fantastic idea. I threw three last year. I got a thank you card from one of the women which I was really greatful for with all the kind words in it. The other two there was nothing, one even made me feel bad because the guest she invited (I did not know many of them) didnt participate much and TONS were late. Made me feel horrible like it was my fault even though I put TONS of money and time into it. The thought alone showing your appreciation to me is enough!

augh, I'm so glad you posted this! my shower is next weekend & hostess gifts! must buy. or make. I'll probably make everyone some sort of food related something or other. keeps costs down & I can afford time. or you could do a homemade chai recipe if she likes tea? this is so good:

and homemade liquors are always fun, too. and a lot of people are impressed by them:

I think that sounds like a good plan. I'm hosting a shower in a month, and the only thing that I'd really like to receive from the honoree is appreciation for the effort that I've put into it. If she wants to get me something, that's cool (she hosted mine last year and I got her a few books that I thought she'd like since we read a lot of the same genres), but a nice card and note would be the best part.

I'm not sure about shower etiquette (I don't see why the mug/coffee/hot chocolate wouldn't be okay), but mine was thrown by my sil and DH's aunt. I got sil a giftcard to VS along with some baby items (she had a baby 3 months before me). Got DH's aunt a gift cert to the spa.

I'm having my second baby shower on Saturday and this one is being thrown mostly by my lovely Aunt. I was planning on getting her something small (we can't afford spending anything really, but I'd feel horrible) like a coffee mug and maybe some packs of Starbucks VIA and a cookie to go in it. It wouldn't be that expensive, and it's cute. I've run into a problem though. I was under the impression it was just her hosting, but the invite says my two cousins (her daughters) are also hosting. I know one of the girls is (or was) breastfeeding, so coffee is out. I was thinking hot cocoa, but I have no idea if the other cousin drinks coffee or not. Would it be acceptable to do one coffee mug, and two hot chocolate mugs as tiny thank yous along with a card later on?
