@LemonJack: Overall, I wouldn't go back and do two bathrooms back to back! But it was pretty easy as long as you're not under time constraints (I was working part time, husband full time, no kids at the time). We had mold in our master bathroom floor, it was little enough we used part bleach part water to get rid of it. Our shower walls originally had plastic vinyl like stuff that we pulled off. We then took it down to the studs and installed the waterproof board (hardibacker) and coated it with a waterproof paint that was highly suggested (goes on pink/light green dries red/dark green). We bought everything from Home Depot/lowes. Countertops we're IKEA and accent tile was from online.

I haven't (but thinking about it) but my friend at work just had her small shower redone this summer and the shower door glass alone was almost $2k (down from an initial quote of $4k just for the glass). I think the quotes of nearer to $10k are more likely.

@Mamaof2: That's good to know, thanks! Ours is even smaller than that (it's TINY), but I would imagine the labor would be about the same. Yours looks great! We're envisioning something like that. We figure if it's that tiny we want it to at least be really nice.

@looch: That's good to know. I thought I had a pretty good idea of the ballpark cost, but maybe I was completely off.

@mrsmacSLP: How was the process doing it yourself? My dad has done a lot of remodeling, and I like doing projects, so it's something I would potentially consider. I'd definitely bring in professionals for certain parts. My only real hesitation is we think there might be water damage behind the original tiles and I would want someone who really knows what they're doing to deal with that.

We had our shower gutted and replaced (tiled) - small walk in with glass doors and it was almost 10K - I was shocked such a small shower cost that much.

@LemonJack: I don't know, $5000 would be the labor cost alone for all that demo. Then it would be another $5000 just for the fixtures...and I am not talking super fancy. To replace the shower stall doors is about $1300 for materials where I live...labor is probably another $1000 on top of that.

Tile work is also super expensive, even if you get stock tiles, the labor is what's going to be a huge part of the budget.

We just completed two remodels last summer. Both bathrooms were similar in size and we tiled and inserted a shower pan into done and a bathtub in the other. Our total cost for both was $10,500. We did all the work (including the plumbing but had a friend that is a plumber check it out) except installing new counter tops.

@youboots: Yeah, that's what I figured. We had someone come in and look today and she said something about $10K and I was totally thrown, because I had asked just about the (small) shower upstairs. I think she misheard me and was estimating the cost for both. I'm going to email her, but was thinking if they were trying to charge 10K I was either totally off with my thoughts on pricing, or they were ridiculously overpriced.

We've done two total gut jobs in bathrooms. Depending on where you live I would say for demo, tile, door and everything you're looking at around $5000.

We have two showers in our house that we're looking to redo. Both are small stall showers. One of them we can expand to make larger, and we'll likely just put an insert in that space since it's not used often. The other one will be used often, but can't be expanded. We're planning on having it tiled, getting a new shower pan, and getting a frameless door.

For those who have had showers redone, would you mind sharing the cost? I know there are a ton of factors at play, but I'm looking for a ballpark range so I know roughly what to expect.
