We also love the book "The Kissing Hand." Mine are both very shy and had never been away from me besides a few hours with grandparents before starting preschool. I tried to make it as exciting as possible, they picked out their outfits, new backpacks etc. and we talked repeatedly about how the day would go. My 3 year old did great, my 2 year old had some trouble because all of the other kids in his class were also crying. By the second week there were no tears and it was probably harder for me than them!

My 3 year old always loses it at the beginning of drop off classes, bug comes out at the end smiling and giggling....so even a rough drop off doesn't mean LO won't have fun! You might need to repeat this to yourself, because it is tough when they're beggibg you not to go. Maybe try some books/shows about school and parents coming back? llama llama misses mama was a hit around here, as is the "grown ups cone back" Daniel Tiger :)

My little guy started preschool at 2, had mostly only been left with family, and was pretty shy. The first few weeks were amazing (it was so new and exciting that he didn't even really notice.) Except the first day was rough. But after that, smooth sailing. Then for a few months, a few tears at drop-off, but mostly fine. Now he loves it and doesn't even really care that I'm dropping him off. It doesn't sound like my guy is quite as shy as yours, but he's definitely shy and attached to Mama, and preschool has been great for him. Good luck, Mama!

My lo just turned 3 and will be starting preschool next month. He has not been left with anyone besides family before. when were out and i have to go to the bathroom or somewhere, he has to come or he panics and cries. Im kinda worried preschool is gonna be a disaster. I dont have anyone one i could drop him off with to practice leaving me either.

How did your shy child manage at preschool?
