My LO is 3 now. And we started her in daycare at 2. She didn't interact with other kids for MONTHS. She's very shy. But, once she was comfortable she did interact and seemed so happy to be there.
Don't let anyone make you feel like it's odd. It's totally normal.

I think that is very developmentally typical for 14 months - and it was her first day!

Bright side: It sounds like they have a class of social butterflies and that's what they are used to... so I bet your LO will acclimate soon enough and have a lot of fun with her little friends!

It's her first day! My son had been in the toddler room for about 4 months (plus 6 months in the baby room, so not new to daycare) when one of his teachers told me their goal for him for the next month was to use more than one word at a time. At home he was talking in paragraphs. I think it's not remotely unusual for a kid to take a while to get acclimated, especially if she's generally shy.

@petitenoisette: I think that's what they must mean. Thanks for the encouragement! @MenagerieMama: I'm glad someone else has a little observer  It seems totally normal to me, too, but the teachers acted like it was so odd!

Um I didn't think kids that age really are able to play with each other! Like developmentally it hasn't happened yet. I'm thinking the teacher more just means she didn't really play much, because otherwise they're a bit confused about typical child development! And I definitely wouldn't worry about her spending her first day just observing Especially if that's her normal personality.

My LO is very much an observer in new situations. She's been in her new room 3 months now and still barely talks - maybe 50 words, but has 100s at home! Your LO sounds normal to me :)

DD is 14 months, and today they moved her from the baby room to the toddler room for the first time. When I went to pick her up, before they said anything else they asked me if she ever plays with other babies. They said that she spent the day mostly sitting in the corner watching, and didn't really interact with the other kids. In the baby room she mostly has played alone, too, probably because she was several months older than the next kid.

The way they said it sounded like they thought it was weird, but she's always been shy, only interacts with other kids at daycare, can barely walk, and it seems pretty normal to me to be reserved in that situation. I'm not crazy, right? Is there anything I can do to help her? She's only 14 months, so it's not like I can talk through it with her that much.
