I didn't read all of the replies, so sorry if this is repeat...but I think it makes total sense to have somewhat similar names because that is your naming style! There is also the factor of familiarity...psychologically we are always more attracted to what we know. I had a hard time with loving hyming names just because they are my "style" (and with DS3, we were getting desperate :silly: )

ETA: Our boys' names are all similar styles...all three are surnames (although no one has ever pointed that out) and two of them are actually presidential surnames (also never pointed out by anyone...actually, I didn't even know one of them was a president until we had decided on a name *facepalm*--history is not my strongest suit)

Go for it!

But what it's worth, all 3 of my kids have the same first letter. With our second, I picked his name to sort of match big sister's name. With our 3rd, we had no choice bc it would be weird to have two with the same letter and not the 3rd.

Totally random but I think rhyming names are also funny in a good way. In college, I was helping run a preschool summer camp and I kid you not, there were 4 year old triplets named "Eddie, Teddie, and Joshua." Being immature college students, we kept asking Joshua if we were sure that was his name. :silly:

@Goldengirl: I actually sort of did think about this. My son's name is Rowan which is kind of Irish and distinct so I couldn't name the other one like Anthony or Michael or something. I went with the Irish theme and people always comment how cute they sound together. For what that's worth!

My kids names are really similar. We already had to find names that exist in both languages and sound good in both languages—then DH and a I had to agree. Thst was a hard enough task. So I don’t even care that their names are similar.

They have a different beginning initial but both end in A and are both short. (Think Kaya and Akira). Who cares. I think they sounded cute together.

I've never been bothered by rhyming names or similar names... my brother and I have names that start with the same letter but that was by chance and there are only 2 of us...

I will admit the one thing that does annoy me, but honestly who am I... is when there's a large family and they all purposefully use the same first letter... for example there is a family I know, the mom had 3 boys and used "K" for their names, now those boys have kids and they used "K" for all of those names. bleh.. not my favorite.. didn't the duggars to that too?? I think?? anyway I dont' like that.

@Goldengirl: I don’t think much about other people’s kids’ names as a whole, other than if they have a whole bunch of kids (like 4+) named following a pattern, then break it for subsequent children.

I have three girls close in age, and logistically it’s bern once that their names all start with different letters for initial labeling purposes (because they have a lot of the same/similar stuff). I also like that their names end in a different sound (think Charlotte, Vivienne, and Olivia - not their names, but similar idea), because when I call for/speak to them, it’s easy to hear who I mean (or harder to pretend they don’t hear me, haha).

Both of our boys names start with L and we are always asked if it was intentional... it was not and it gets pretty annoying when people assume it was. We had our first son's name picked out years before he was even born. Then when we had our second son it took forever to agree on a name!

Just go with what you like. People will always have an opinion about something!

My two brothers and I all have Irish names ending in -lynn, -lan (but pronounced the same as the others) and -lin. Not intentionally matchy but ended up that way. It was never an issue and I think we all like our names. I'd pick the name you love and not worry about it.

I don't think anyone will notice if the names go together or not. DS and DD's names both start in E and end in N, not purposely, we just liked the names. If we have another it most likely won't follow that pattern.

FWIW, the name I like for our daughter ends similar to my son's name (both end with -an). I think it's fine, though! And my son mostly goes by a shorter nickname anyway. Are either names likely to be turned into nicknames?

I don’t think it matters. Our girls names end in the same sound (ie/y) and the first letter of their names follow alphabetically (think A, B, C). Neither was intentional, and no one has noticed (not even my husband). Ironically one thing people have noticed is that our younger daughter doesn’t have a flower name like her older sister, cousin, and family friend close to her. When I told people we considered using our older DDs middle name for our younger DDs first name, the most common response was “Wait, what’s her middle name?” In short, I don’t think people give other kids’ name matchy-ness much thought.

@Goldengirl: I wouldnt make the decision based on how the names would sound together because ultimately their names wont be said together all that often except with twins/multiples. We have 3 kids and their names are similar in that they are all 2 syllables and all biblical. Their middle names all start with the same letter. This wasnt intentional. Some people comment on how nicely the names flow together but it wasnt planned at all

Eh, all four of our names practically rhyme. They all end in either -an or -on. Doesn't bother me. I routinely call my kids by the wrong name but don't think it's just b/c of that.

I wouldn’t do something that completely rhymes (Grace and Chase were two names I happened to like and thought would sound very funny together). And probably I would try to avoid ending with the same sound, if I could, but names are so hard! It’s impossible to come up with a second name that checks every single box. (For my first I was adamant about not having a super popular name. My second’s name was the 9th most popular in our state. 🤷🏻‍♀️).

Who cares? It makes sense that your tastes would be similar, and I know a ton of families with kids where the parents strived to do this.

My only concern with ours - we have 3 - is that the first two were so different, I didn't want the third to be too close sounding to one or the other, leaving an odd man out. Which really doesn't matter anyway, but that's where I was with names.

Definitely considered it quite a bit. Mostly we avoided names that started with the same letter because I personally think that’s way too cutesy. Also avoided same first letter as the last name too for both boys. We mostly considered names that seemed similar in ‘style’ as in if name 1 was Jack (classic, not out there) we weren’t gonna go with like Axel or something for kid 2 that is more trendy or unique.

In the end, I think if you really like it, just go for it. But if it bugs you now, consider that it will probably continue bothering you!

I have an Emma and seriously considered Emilia for my second. I didn't because, ha, way too similar. But I really did strongly consider it! ETA: Rocco and Milo would be dreamy brothers to have!!

I thought about it a lot and that the names sound good together was very high on the list. LO1 is Molly so for Lo2, I nixed Ivy even though I love it and ruled out several other names like Amy. I find myself saying/writing my kids names a lot so I like that they go well together and I do notice when other families kids names are “off”. But I don’t judge them for it and I don’t like, dwell on it? So only don’t use the name of it bugs you.

I feel like I'm way overthinking this. For those with two or more kids, how much did you consider or care about how the names all sounded together? There's a name I love that is similar to my son's name, in the sense that it's from the same language/family and also the last syllable is the same sound. So think Emily and Hailey. Or Emmett and Beckett. Or Rocco and Milo. Benjamin and Simon. Not rhyming but similar sounds/feeling, like they go together. Does this matter? Will people think we're being cutesy? We're not, it just happens that my current name obsession feels similar to my son and I'm torn. But also feel like it's better to think of them as individuals and not a pair. And also, who really cares.

Thoughts?
