@Mrs. Pen: Thanks for the comment.

I don't think you upset your mother by not liking your siblings. I actually have no expectations of the LOs liking each other if that is what happens. I just hope they will be there for each other if they really need it.

People are different with way different personalities, can't force people to like each other.

My thoughts right now (might be illogical) is trying to support a loving relationship as much as I can while they are young. I want to at least try my best if it doesn't work out I can at least say that.

@hummusgirl: I love your advice! I hate, as an adult, when I share my true feelings and people tell me I shouldn't feel that way, or criticize/judge me for my feelings.
I try to keep that in mind with me LO, it's easy to laugh when he gets mad/hurt over something that an adult wouldn't, but I check myself that his feelings are just as real and valid as mine, and I need to show him I respect him by acknowledging that.
I agree with the others about probably just stop asking. I definitely don't remember my mom ever asking me if I liked my siblings - and I had five of them! And there were definitely times I did not like them. and honestly until I was an adult, I didn't even like one of my siblings. I never thought about my mom's perspective on that though, so it makes me wonder if it upset her!

@winniebee: Thank you! Yup I think stop asking seems like a good strategy right now. Haha.

I would just stop asking. Does it really matter at this point? The baby is just a baby! Eventually, they will develop a relationship and will like each other (or not) for real and then you will know. All that you can do is make sure they don't beat each other up or do evil things to each other :silly:

If he brings it up on his own, I would listen, and see what he says. Sometimes it's just about the attention the baby is getting. You can say something like "sometimes it's very hard to share toys" or "sometimes it is very hard to be a big brother" etc.

You want the truth? You can't handle the truth! :-)

I'd stop asking, validate his feelings, and if he does bring up not liking LO2 on his own, I'd consider it a parenting victory that he feels comfortable expressing his true feelings to you.

I mean, as an adult how annoying is it to try to complain about someone/something and have your friend or significant other try to change your mind or tell you that you don't in fact feel that way? Sometimes kids just need to know that it's ok not to be happy and in love with everyone all the time, and they're safe with you and you're not afraid of their big and sometimes negative feelings.

@Raindrop: I get that, I'm just not sure taking temperature checks on feelings keeps rivalry away. For peace of mind though, as one big sis that stopped liking her baby bro as soon as he became mobile and a general nuisance no matter what I always had his back. Looks like @Adira: has noticed the same with her boys.

@Greentea: That's actually a really good idea. Thanks. :)

@Adira: Thanks for the comment! Yes it's when LO2 started getting mobile is when LO1 started not being a fan of him. Yeah I think I'll just stop asking for a while. :)

I would probably just stop asking if I were you! My eldest (2.5) used to really dote on his baby brother, but once baby brother got mobile and started getting all in his stuff, he was NOT a fan. They don't seem to get along (baby is constantly destroying/taking whatever toddler is doing, and toddler's constantly yelling at him, pushing him away, etc). But I think that's normal. And sometimes older brother will state that his brother is "my best friend!" so I know they love each other, even though they get on each other's nerves!

I would probably validate him. "Yeah, I wouldn't like it if somebody bit me either. But baby bro is younger than you and he doesn't know any better. We'll have to teach him to be gentle and learn to share. You are really good at those things and he is still learning." I'm just assuming that's the case, so I'd start there.

@Autumnmama79: Gosh yes I was worried that I might be encouraging it by just asking! I have asked this of him before LO was born because I wanted to teach him what love/liking meant and I have just carried this on. I do only ask like once a week or so. Thanks!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks for the comment! :) Just read your update... it's not really reassurance... I was using it as a tool to try to prevent sibling revery ... maybe this is illogical but LO1 was the only baby for a long time... both sides and he got showered with attention by family and I knew that another would rock his world so I wanted to help transition him as smoothly as possible.

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your family!

As long as big bro isn't trying to hurt baby bro I don't see why big bro has to like baby bro. I don't quite understand the need for reassurance how the LOs feel about each other or family.

I'm sure its just a phase and if anything you are kind of encouraging it by continuously asking if he likes/loves members of your family. He also may be noticing on some level that its getting a reaction out of you when he says no, so, he keeps doing it.

Its never occurred to me to ask if LO likes/loves our family members - because of course she does!

I periodically ask LO1 (3 years old) if he likes/loves baby brother.

Usually it’s a resounding yes along with liking/loving others in the family.

The past few weeks… he has said no. I also mix baby brother in with the rest of the family and re-ask it to see if he actually understood what I’m asking. He still said no. At first I thought he was being fickle because sometimes I get a no when I ask about myself.

A few days ago I finally asked why he didn’t like/love baby brother. He said because baby brother tried to bite him the other day and he doesn’t like that. I said oh! Well baby brother didn’t mean to try to hurt you… he was just playing and that’s the only way he knows how to play now but next time I see baby brother try to bite you I’ll stop him.

Yesterday I asked again, LO1 still said no! I asked why again and LO1 said it’s because he tried to bite (I guess not over that yet) and baby brother tries to take his things (toys). Yikes he’s adding on the reasons why he doesn’t like baby brother. I ask if baby brother bit him recently (he said no) and baby brother is not trying to bite you anymore. Then I said that some of his toys he will need to share but we can figure what toys are just his.

Anyways. How would you deal with this situation? I kind of think I might be in over my head right now. I’m not sure if I’m helping the situation is what I’m worried about. LO1 seems to just be building a list against LO2 and I’m not sure if what I’m saying is helping.

If anything please tell me this is a phase!
