I think adding in a pump or two is probably a smart idea but otherwise continuing to nurse on demand is the way to go. The wee one is also probably enjoying the sucking action and finding the constant closeness very comforting.

I would pump a few times a day, maybe 3, after he eats to make sure you are fully emptied. That should reduce the risk of your milk supply dropping while he is sick. You're constantly making milk so if you pump after he falls asleep, even if he wakes 30mins later you will have some milk. Hope baby feels better soon!

I would pump. I don't think you need to worry about pumping too much and not having enough for your next nursing session...your boobs should keep up with the demand.

I hope he feels better soon!

@avivoca: @rrachael: I have thought about pumping but he wants to nurse so frequently that I am afraid of being in a situation where there is no milk. I haven't felt engorged at all though, so that either means the snacking is doing a sufficient job or my supply is low? I don't know if it is bc my supply is low he keeps wanting to snack or because he just wants to snack that it feels as if my supply is low. His output seems normal for wet diapers.

I'm sorry your little one is sick!! That's so hard. Is he losing weight at all? To maintain supply during times like this, I would add in some pump sessions .... especially if the baby is only nursing a few minutes then falling asleep. I know pumping isn't fun/easy though :(. You could also try hand expressing some milk every so often so that you're stimulating production without being attached to a machine.

Is he having plenty of wet diapers? I think the constant snacking will help keep your supply up, but if you are worried, you could try pumping when he would normally eat when he's not sick.

My 8 week old has been sick for the last week, and he hasn't been nursing as much the last couple of days. I'm not sure if it's because he's so congested, but he'll nurse for a few minutes then fall asleep, wake up crying 30 minutes later, and so i'll nurse him thinking he's hungry but he passes out after a few minutes. And the cycle repeats itself.

I'm not sure what to do, and if it's going to affect my supply! He used to nurse every 2 hours during the day, but now he's just snacking every hour. It's starting to affect his night sleep/feeding as well, and he hasn't had any poopy diapers yesterday or today (before he'd poop like 3-4 times a day, at least).

Any advice? Experience?
