I don't go to doctors when I'm sick, because it's usually just a cold and there's not much a doctor can do for a cold.

Last time, I went mostly to my OB. Next time, I will go to my primary, or if it is something that requires a specialist, to a specialist. My OB underdiagnosed (or maybe misdiagnosed) an injury I sustained when I fell last time, and I didn't know it until I saw a specialist well after the fact. As long as everyone is communicating, I think it's fine to see people whose specialty you need!

I don't have a PCP, but when I had a terrible cough that I couldn't shake in my second trimester, I went to urgent care, and then called to run the prescriptions they gave me past my OB. Well, one of the prescriptions - I wouldn't even consider taking the other two while pregnant.

If I hadn't been weeks away from my next OB check-up, I would have asked her about it before going to urgent care.

Only time I was sick was feverish at 38 weeks. They had me go straight to l&d to get checked out as it was the weekend. I had flu b and had to get an IV for fluids because I was dehydrated and also took tamiflu. So I would go to my OB first and then let them tell me where to go.

I had a weird lump in my armpit this pregnancy and saw my regular doctor. And then found out that the midwives at my birth center had the same thing to say about it...if I had known I wouldn't have bothered going to the doctor!

@Corduroy: That is frustrating.
@GreenThumb: But if you already have a primary care doc, would you ask your OB if he/she would refer you back to your home clinic? Or would your OB handle it? And would you wait till your next OB appt?

I guess I have no idea if my OB even has "same day sick visits" while I know that my family doc (who sees pregnant women as their OB in 1st and 2nd tri) does do same day sick visits.

@ShootingStar: That is super frustrating!

@sslm: interesting

@sapphire: Right? I love my family doc! She does OB but doesn't do delivery, so I got a different OB after 1st tri.

@Truth Bombs: :)@T.H.O.U.: cool

My OB is a DO so he's good with it all. But one time I had a rash and had to go into a clinic. I called and confirmed with my OB later and made sure they agreed with the diagnosis and prescription.

I had a sinus infection with both pregnancies. My OB was like "yeah that's not the part of the body I handle! Go see primary care and tell her she can call me if she wants my ok on medications" my PCP is a friend of mine and had no issue treating me, and my OB delivered my PCP's kids so they are friends too.

I've always called my OB and they've either helped me or recommended that I see my PCP. I just get too worried that it will end up being pregnancy related or affect the pregnancy...

I guess especially in the third tri.

It's different in Canada since its all publicly funded... I believe the protocol is that your OB or midwife becomes your primary care and you have to see them first. They can then tell you to see your family doctor. I think. I imagine it could work similarly in the states with some insurance companies!

If it's something that I think could affect the baby, I contact my OB first. If it's something else I'd go to my PCP but still consider running any prescription I'm given by my OB.

I should have gone to see a family doc as midwife suggested I do. But I never bothered and eventually I got better. I just couldn't be bothered to see another doctor when I already have so many more appts to attend than usual

It's tough when I've gotten sick when pregnant. My primary care wants nothing to do with me and says I need to talk to my OB. But my OB doesn't have regular doctor tools, like to look at your ears. Last pregnancy I had sudden dizziness and started with my OB and after checking me out they thought it was my ears but couldn't confirm and my primary care said they wouldn't prescribe anything 😕.

I'd always call my OB/GYN first and then let them refer me to whomever depending on my issue. Example: My OB saw me for a rash on my hands and then she referred me to a dermatologist.

@autumnlove: Are your OB and family doc in the same medical record system, or do they communicate well?

I feel like most people like their primary doc more because of the longer standing relationship, but what do I know?

If you get sick while pregnant with some regular thing that you would usually go to your main doctor to get seen for--now that you are pregnant, do you go to your OB instead?

I'm asking by specialty, please answer for either doctor or nurse practitioner within that specialty. Thank you!
