<description>&#60;p&#62;I'd like to give her the benefit of the doubt in that her wording was just off.  If she had said &#34;I need to take a sick day&#34; instead of &#34;I plan to call in sick&#34;  It wouldn't be alarming.  I think the fact that she told you and didn't seem uncomfortable doing so means she didn't think it was wrong which leads me to believe she had something scheduled.  She wanted you to know instead of counting on her to be there to cover and she wouldn't be which makes me what to think she's not being irresponsible.  Keep us posted!

<description>&#60;p&#62;If you were not her supervisor before that, and there’s a possibility she had not been notified of the change, I think it’s completely plausible that she did not think she had to elaborate for you. I know when I was doing fertility treatments, I often would not know until a day or two in advance that I would need to call in sick bc it would depend on how my body was responding to meds. That could be why she did not give the team a heads up. Or a myriad of other reasons. I would wait and see if this is a pattern.

<description>&#60;p&#62;@Corduroy:  she wouldn't have been approved because you were out? That's weird for me, because my days off are totally unrelated to my supervisors. Especially if it's a single day. Obviously our whole team can't be out at the same time but a couple people isn't an issue. I would just make sure she knows your expectations for future reference. But otherwise I personally wouldn't feel comfortable asking for details or being asked. I once asked a team mate (same level) and immediately regretted it. 😬

<description>&#60;p&#62;This is complicated, because I have 100 percent called in sick when I wasn't actually sick...call it a mental health day, if you will. But I certainly didn't tell anyone beforehand. I don't know that I'd personally reprimand much, if at all. I don't really see the difference in her telling you vs. someone taking a last-minute sick day for whatever reason (as I've done) other than being oddly honest. Frankly, I think all leave should just be filed under PTO rather than sick and vacation anyway, and then it wouldn't matter. Caveat: none of my workplaces would go up in flames if any one of us were out for a day here or there. Also, I think workplaces should be more flexible in general...so if this person is generally a good and responsible employee, and gets their work done on time, as a manager myself, I wouldn't really care.

<description>&#60;p&#62;We also get sick and vacation time. It has to be approved by our boss. Sick time can be pre-planned (doc appts) or of course, when you or a child wake up sick. If I went around saying &#34;I'm taking a sick day Friday&#34; it would be assumed it was a pre-planned medical appointment that would have been approved. If my boss thought I was taking a fake sick day, I would get spoken to.

<description>&#60;p&#62;Vacation is separate from sick time.  Vacation must be approved in advance.  If she knew she would be out she's responsible (by practice not by policy) to notify the team and getting her projects covered.  She likely wouldn't have been approved to take today off because I already had submitted to take today off.  She didn't ask.  &#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;So maybe my issue with it isn't that she's logging it as sick leave but that she didn't notify me and the group in advance the way you would for a planned absence. I think that's what feels less than above board.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;To complicate things up until yesterday she reported to my VP with only dotted line/unofficial to me for about a year.  Then unexpectedly and probably unbeknownst to her she officially became my direct report yesterday.  I haven't had any supervisor training or history supervising at thing company.

<description>&#60;p&#62;@Corduroy:  I have a whole host of medical issues, and yes, I use my sick days to take care of that stuff, and most of it is &#34;planned&#34;.  My job has personal leave and sick leave, and theoretically personal leave should be planned at least 3 days in advance and sick leave doesn't have to be planned in advance (obviously, if you wake up sick or are sick overnight).  But medical issues (as per our contract) are covered by sick leave.  Luckily, my boss NEVER EVER asks for details, and thank god he doesn't, because I don't really want to tell him that I'm having diarrhea again every time I eat, so I'm going back to my GI doctor.  Or that the mass in my breast has changed, so I've scheduled another diagnostic mammogram.  Or that my vaginal discomfort has gotten so much worse that I'm going to see a pelvic floor therapist.  Or that I've developed a toenail fungus, and I'm going to a podiatrist to have my toenail removed and my nailbed treated.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;Basically, there are just so many reasons I could be taking a planned sick day that I wouldn't want to discuss with my boss.  If I just said &#34;a medical appointment&#34;, it almost leads to, &#34;Why, is everything alright?&#34; and then I have to decide if I'm really going to talk to my boss about my breast/vagina/nail fungus or if I'm going to lie.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;If your workplace has rules about time off, and she's following the rules.....who cares?

<description>&#60;p&#62;Uhh, yeah that's kind of weird to me, the only instance I can think of is if my kid has been sick, and let's say DH took the 1st day, so if I know she still can't go to school tomorrow, I already know I'm taking a day and I would/could take a sick day for that. I obv just don't tell HR till the day of, but I'd have no problem telling my boss/co-worker that I anticipate not being in tomorrow.

We are supposed to schedule all vacation ahead of time and then the choice we can use unexpectedly, aka sick.  So in our case it would be a bad move to tell our bosses that we planned to call out sick tomorrow.. in that case we should use a vacation day and plan it.  I'm not sure what, if anything our boss would do or could do legally/hr issue.. but I think it's a dumb move to say it...

On Tuesday I asked my direct report to cover something for me this afternoon and she said &#34;No, I plan to call in sick day that day.&#34; I asked if she was ok and she said she was fine.  I cocked my head and waited for her to elaborate with something like &#34;medical appointment&#34; but she didn't.  I was so surprised she thought her statement was ok that I didn't know how to respond.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I was (actually) sick yesterday and didn't get to circle back with her.&#60;/p&#62;
&#60;p&#62;I know there are legitimate reasons you could know in advance that you need a sick day.  And there are a lot of questions you can't ask about sick days.  Am I being a push over if I don't press why she was casually dropping that she'll be calling in sick?  Or is it reasonable to assume a mostly responsible employee has a legit reason and wasn't flaunting that she was playing hooky?
