People just dont think, especially if they don't have babies themselves. I would ask before you go visit, not in a rude way but more casually, like 'I hear there's a bug going around, are you two ok'.

My MIL somehow feels it doesn't matter when she is sick and still insists on coming round and holding the baby. She would deliberately not tell us she's unwell as she knows I'd ask her not to see us until she was better. So, my tip is to use small talk to find out is anyone is sick, if you ask directly she may not tell you the truth (but hopefully your MIL has more sense than mine!)

Oh no! I would say politely, "in the future, can you please warn us if one of you is sick for LO's sake". I hope you don't get what she had!

We visited the in-laws today and MIL was sick! She was considerate enough to not hold LO but I wish she called and canceled instead! Her and FIL just returned from a vacation from France and Morocco and I specifically waited over a week before we saw them just in case they caught something. I figured it'll take a few days before symptoms show up so we waited to schedule our visit. Turns out she knew she was sick and she still had us come!

Now I'm watching LO like a hawk and having DH and I take vitamins. MIL had that glossy-eyed sick look, had a sore throat and a cough! LO was already licking FIL's hand before I found out she was sick! Arrrrrrgggghhh! So irresponsible!

Aside from asking every single time if someone's sick, what else can I do to avoid this situation? I really don't want it to happen again.
