@ALV91711: actually... it was a pretty easy trip home as he was sick enough he sleep most of the time and had no energy so we didn't have to keep him entertained.

@RKitty: that does not sound like a fun trip home. I’d have to do the same. Changing flights is so expensive!

This thread illustrates why I always bring lysol wipes and hand sanitizer on planes. They are disgusting and it's largely unavoidable - plus people are most contagious usually before they even know that they are sick - but constant use of hand sanitizer and wipes really helps...

@ALV91711: that happened to us actually. We flew to a family reunion with my 14 month old. On our flight out there he caught croup from somebody. We ended up at a childrens urgent care during the trip. And flew home before he was recovered. It didnt even occur to me to cancel or change or flights because we were flying home on a Sunday and we all had to be back at work on Monday. (My mom was a teacher and with us on the trip and since it was summer she watched him till he was cleared ro go back to daycare). Not to mention we couldn't have afforded the several hundred the new tickets would have easily costs us as our orginal tickets were 600 round trip a seat!

Thankfully because he was sick he wasn't as active as his normal self and was tired so slept most of the return trip. We kept him away from other people, covered his face as much as possible and brought lysol wipes and hand sanitizer in attempts to reduce the spread of it.

Glad you went and are having fun!

This made me think what would you do if your kid was sick but it was the flight home from your vacation? What if you couldn’t stay longer and had to fly with a sick kid. I probably thought this because yesterday I was flying home with my two boys and it would really suck to fly with a sick kid.

I would have gone to urgent care, gotten some Zofran, and taken the flight. They give kids like half of an orally dissolving one. There is a liquid too for toddlers. Glad everything worked out. I still have some leftover from pregnancy. Helped when I got a recent bout of food poisoning XD

I've been following along this thread mostly because it's a situation that could so easily happen to any family and I was really interested in the (many) different opinions.

But I also wanted to chime in as a life-long motion sickness sufferer and sing the praises of Dramamine. Cars, boats, planes - they all make me puke. If I take dramamine then I feel like every other traveler. It's such an incredibly embarassing thing to be a grown adult throwing up on a plane :( Bonus points that my midwife let me know it's safe while pregnant and that saved a trip to Scotland for me and our family. I missed one dose before a short leg of air travel and that was the only time I got sick during 10 days of flights, trains, and car travel in a foreign country.

@Ajsmommy: Kudos to you for how you handled this thread where (more than) half of the people were bashing / despised on the idea of you still considering going. Good for you girl .

Just like everything else on the internet, we can only speculate. Only the parents right there with their kids who can observe can make an informed decision. Of course anyone in their right mind wouldn't go if the child is puking every 20 mins and were very very sick, but if the puking weans off and the child acts normal, honestly I don't see why not. Glad that your child felt fine and everyone made it in good health!

@graceandjoy: I have an awesome one... we were on a flight home for Christmas and my 6mo old was fussing right after we boarded. Take-off was delayed because of a mechanical issue. This woman who looked like she partied all night and slept on the street (rats nest in her hair, dark mascara circles under her eyes, party clothes at 9am) sitting in front of us kept giving us nasty looks and sighing really loudly. Finally they decide to just take-off, but there will be no running water on the plane. 30 mins in, we hit turbulence and party girl pukes all over herself. She can't get up to clean herself up because of the turbulence and is repeatedly puking into the airsick bag now. She finally gets up, but remember... no water on the plane. I'm passing baby wipes up to the people that were sitting next to her who got splattered. By now, multiple people on the flight are sympathy puking and the flight attendants are walking down the aisles handing out airsick bags. The pilot made an announcement that they were going to turn down the cabin temperature in an attempt to help everyone feel better. I swear 2/3 of that plane was throwing up by the time we landed.... and my 6 mo old just slept the whole time. By far my most memorable flight.

My dad was a pilot for American when I was growing up, so we basically flew somewhere every school holiday. I have at least 3 separate memories of throwing up on planes. I could tell you all kinds of tales.

And once, when my dad was younger and used to fly smaller commuter planes-this was the days when the cockpit was just separated from where people sat with a curtain--a man was sick and trying to make it to the bathroom at the front, but sort of started throwing up while walking and then stumbled and threw up all over my dad's back. While he was flying. LOL.

@periwinklebee: ugh why are they not helpful? Maybe they think you are a jerk if your kid gets sick but at that point can’t they have some compassion ... I’m so sorry you have to deal with motion sickness. I’ve always had it myself and when I was 8-9 I puked alllll over my dad at the end of an international flight (thankfully not earlier I guess!). Needless to say they did not hold us up at customs

Barf bags and vomit everywhere! And my in laws took a flight overseas and the whole plane was airsick from severe turbulence. They were terrified to fly home.

@bhbee: Ugh, similar experience... when LO got air sick, the flight attendant gave us some serious side eye and was really rude about bringing a trash bag and some napkins. I was completely covered in puke and had already gone through my spare clothes because LO peed all over me while I was changing his diaper before the flight. (Had to put the pee clothes back on, lol)... We're traveling to a family wedding end of May and I'm already dreading it - flight is six hours so it's not like I can cut down on his eating/drinking the whole flight...

@2littlepumpkins: Oh my gosh that is horrifying! I am not sure I could have handled that ferry boat ride. I also have a massive vomit aversion and it makes flying super rough for me. Conversations like this--and the thought that people might knowingly bring a vomiting kid on a plane--are kind of giving me a panic attack!

Any update on how it went?
