@Portboston: We're similar in the sense that if we see something that could be a detriment to our own child we are compelled to speak up!

I have spoken up about the same issue twice this winter. I walked into the room, saw the visibly sick toddler and immediately said something. I'm not going to be quiet or PC when it comes to something that could affect the health of my own child. I believe all parents should play an active role in their child's schooling - best to start practicing now.

I am glad that this type of policy works for your family. I wouldn’t ask about it personally. Let the people who should take action do so without other input. Also as a side note- elementary schools definitely do not have a strict policy, how do you feel about when your kids go then? Won’t it just be delaying the inevitable?

I think ONE incident is a little much to assume the school isn't following their own strict policy. I'd assume either the kids seemed fine when they were dropped off or their conditions were already discussed with the school and approved (maybe due to allergies, like others have mentioned). If it happened a lot, then yeah, absolutely ask the school to clarify the rule, but for it happening one time?

@Truth Bombs: I dont think the issue is whether people like it or not though. OP chose the school for it, and the school is seemingly not following it so she's wondering if she should clarify it with them. I sent my kid to a preschool that on paper had a policy like this and I liked it and at that time was full time... but our director clarified when we started that it's more about if the kids nose is just running like a faucet all day long from being sick. It was pretty much parents discretion to determine that. (Meaning there were lots of runny noses all winter.)

We have a similar policy. It is a preschool aimed towards SAHP (but I work full time). I find the policy to be more of a scare tactic then something they enforce. My kid had a cough that lingered all of October and November. It wasn't allergies - he had a virus early October and on the description of the virus it said that the cough can remain persistent for over 6 weeks. I kept him home while he actively had the virus, but I sent him back once he seemed back to himself (actually kept him out longer than the doctor said he needed to be out) despite the cough. I have flexibility at my work, but not the kind of flexibility for him to miss school for 8 weeks.

I wouldn't say anything, but I tend to believe what goes around comes around. I think it's fine to ask for the director to please email out a reminder to all parents of their sick policy. We get it emailed out constantly with a little disclosure that it appears some mamas might need to be reminded of the school's sick policy.

@Ms.Mermaid: Agree completely. I think most of the people saying they would like this policy are SAHMs or working moms who have incredibly flexible work arrangements without things like deadlines or unmovable meetings. If I kept my kids home every time one of them had a runny nose or a cough I would literally be incapable of doing the work necessary for my company to function. I find it hard to believe that a day care could even be filled to capacity with families who could all make this work. Unless it's something like part time preschool aimed at families with a SAHP.

My daycare's policy is much more lenient than yours, but I still wouldn't say anything. My kids have runny noses all winter long and so do I. We have outdoor and indoor allergies and honestly I'd have to be a SAHM if we had to keep them home for all of that because I wouldn't be able to go to work.

@Mrs D: I was thinking the same thing, sort of, re: coughs. I don’t send my kid when he is sick, but coughs linger forEVER, far past when his doctors says he would be contagious. So I would never get any work done if I didn’t send my kid when he was still coughing, it seems

Coming a little late to this post. I would love this sick policy! I can't believe it sometimes when I see or hear some of the things I see at my DD's preschool (snot/cough).

I would say something.. but not specific. Like I'd play dumb and say something like I observed snot... so is some snot ok but other snot not ... ok ok I know that's not what you would say but that's kinda how I'd approach it. And just see what they say.

@MsMini: @yellowbeach: hmmm I've always thought infection could be any color but allergies wouldn't generally be green? Allergies can be green? I've heard the same though.

@Portboston: either way my main concern would be that I'm keeping mine home and other people aren't. I don't mind colds but if they aren't enforcing it the way they used to then I'd be wondering where it ends. The other thing is a runny nose could just be a cold, or it could be the flu, or croup, or maybe just allergies.

@PinkElephant: agree w/ your advice. No need to bring up a specific couple of kids. If they aren't enforcing it for those two then I'm sure more examples must come to mind anyway.

I’m just over here baffled by the idea that there are kids out there who don’t just have a daycare permacold October-March. Ours marginally follows their own sick policy but we all work full time and all send our sick kids there and know they’ll share germs and that’s kind of the deal? Nobody sends a kid who is actively vomiting or who has HFM or croup to our daycare but runny noses and coughs? Par for the course. I wouldn’t even ask if the sick policy changed, I would just stop keeping my kid home for a runny nose if nobody else is. I doubt the other parents will complain.

@2littlepumpkins: agreed. Why such a strict policy if they’re not adhereing to it? Regardless of color, these noses I’ve seen have been “persistently runny” which is clearly stated in their policy.

@Canoli: I’m not questioning the health status of other children, I’m questioning their policy. As a parent and family, I feel that we’ve signed on to follow their rules but maybe not everyone else is.

@PinkElephant: that’s a great angle to take. I appreciate the advice.

@MsMini: @yellowbeach: thank you for the clarification! I will now be weary of all snot! 😜

I appreciate everyone’s perspective. Like I said in my initial post, this daycare has the strictest sick policy I’ve come across. For some people, that would be a huge negative. For us, it was a positive. I have the flexibility to deal with it so I’d prefer my kid isn’t slathered in snot and coughed on constantly. I just need to ask if theyre actually as strict as they claim to be.

I just wanted to mention, since you are concerned with the green snot situation that according to the peds I work with and my hubby’s allergist, colour of nasal mucous is no longer thought to be indicative of infection status. Clear nasal mucous can be from infection and green can simply be from allergies. The green = illness thing is super old school thinking.

My oldest has October-May runny nose, and the colour changes daily. He is rarely actually *sick* though, which is why I was asking lots of snot questions at work 😉

@Portboston: Perhaps you can say something general but avoid pointing fingers at certain kids/naming names? If you frame it in terms of yourself and your family ("I've noticed lots of kids seem to have colds recently, can you tell me what should really be the determining factor in whether or not I'd need to keep LO home?") This voices your concern, albeit a little indirectly, without seeming like you're asking for health information the school can't give out about another student.

While I can appreciate an attempt by the daycare to avoid having sick kids come to daycare I would not ask for clarification. It’s none of my business nor do I find it appropriate to question the health status of other people’s children. I’m sure my response will not be of popular opinion and you can take it with a grain of salt but my daycare is much more lenient than yours.

@Truth Bombs: wouldn’t it be important to know if their policy has changed in regards to my own child? I would prefer not having to take a day off work for a runny nose if I don’t have to. What’s the point of having the policy if you’re not going to enforce it?

And you’re right that I do not feel confident that they are enforcing the sick policy. I’m not trying to hide that.

Suggesting that they are not properly enforcing the policy because if you felt confident they were, you wouldn’t feel the need to ask and 2. Asking about the status of another child’s health which is information the director can not share with you.
