DS1 is much better today and we seem to be over the fever--I'm so relieved it was short-lived. My mom kept him until lunchtime, and we'll do one more movie today after nap, so we'll be able to keep them well separated until tomorrow morning (which is 24 hours fever-free).

Thanks for the support, Bees!

When my baby was a week old, my 1yr old had a 104 fever and was screaming and super hot to the touch and miserable. In the middle of the night I drove her and the baby to the ER, ya I over freak out. Anyways it was a double ear infection. The newborn and I didn't ever get sick.

This happened to me, this exact thing. DD1 was supposed to go back to daycare on Wednesday (we were discharged from hospital on Monday) and she threw up that night and had a fever. I was so torn on how to be a good mom to both my girls and managed it. I kept the baby close to me and DD1 made a bed on the floor of the living room with a bucket to get sick in and we managed, DD2 never got sick.

DS had a fever when we brought DD home from the hospital. No one else ended up catching it and he was feeling better within a day or two. I hope your son is feeling better soon!

@Jess1483: hugs. I don't have any advice because I only have 1 child, but I can really understand the anxiety, and the feeling of being torn/guilty, so I just want to send you good thoughts! Hope your toddler feels all better soon and everyone can cuddle together

And congratulations on your new baby!

My toddler got a very bad cold when my baby was 6 days old. Because they were both exposed to the same source for the cold and had been around each other as they were both breastfeeding, I just stayed in bed with both of them for a few days. It was awful, but my newborn did not get sick at all. My toddler was throwing up phelm and crying all the time and it was very sad and hard. Hang in there!

My 17 month old had rsv-type symptoms when we brought our DD home from hospital. Cue freak out! Our pedi had me kind of isolate myself with the baby in the house and my husband has a very demanding job and needed to go back to work but had to step in and help. I felt guilty mostly for my son but not for anyone else. Pedi gave me good advice, if I had to be around the sick one, wear a robe and then take it back off when around the newborn.

Thankfully it passed in about a week, but wow was it a long week!

@BabyBoecksMom: @keepcalmcarrie: Luckily, I was able to get about 2 hours to snuggle my toddler this afternoon when my mom came over. And luckily (so far...knock on wood), the newborn is a good napper, so I can also give my toddler some time while he is in the swing. It's just that normally, I'd do everything with him--snuggle, sleep, etc, until he was feeling better, and I'm feeling like I can't provide these things all of a sudden. I know rationally he'll be fine and will forgive me, but it's really tough. I'm not sure a babysitter would do a ton of good, because if the newborn is awake, he's nursing, and I can keep him in the swing the rest of the time. DH also held the baby for a bit today while I took care of my toddler during his meltdown. We'll keep him on medicine now, too (we were trying to evaluate for preschool tomorrow, but it's clear he's not going), which improves his mood greatly, and then he's happier with daddy caring for him.

The bathrobe on/off is a good idea. I changed clothes about 10 times today...the robe seems easier.

Thanks, ladies. I'm trying really hard not to go to worst-case-scenarios, but with hormones and sleep deprivation, it's a struggle.

Aww, so hard! I went through something similar, although my newborn was probably 3 weeks old, not 5 days. So tough on you!

Is there anyone other than your mom who can come help you? To be honest, I would go as far as to hire a babysitter for a few hours to look after your newborn while I snuggled my toddler. He's already going through a pretty big upheaval, and hopefully it's only bad for another day or two, but I would give him all the comfort you can. Your newborn has no idea what's going on right now - as long as someone is caring for him and he doesn't get sick, he will be okay.

If that doesn't work, don't worry, this too shall pass. I didn't have any help when my toddler got sick, but I had the two of them together by myself and just used a ton of Lysol and didn't let LO1 touch or kiss the baby. Baby basically snoozed in the rock and play/swing/occasionally on me while toddler laid next to me in bed and watched TV shows and movies. I kept a bathrobe to put on while I cared for the toddler, and took it off when I handled/breastfed baby (in addition to hand washing).

Huge hugs!

Oh boy! Hugs!

Hopefully it's a short virus and he'll get over it quickly. The newborn can probably sleep in a swing for an hour or two while you cuddle the toddler... and then let him know you need to check on the baby (but make sure you are changing shirts and scrubbing down you hands/arms between kids. Good luck!

We have a 2.5 year-old and a 5 day-old. Today my toddler woke with a fever (not super high, probably in the 101 range, but not totally sure because DH medicated before checking). He is pretty lethargic and alternatively says his tummy hurts and/or his throat hurts.

I'm really struggling. Both emotionally being torn between my boys (my toddler is sobbing for me and wanting to snuggle all day, but we're trying to keep him downstairs while I'm upstairs with the little one) and physically balancing their needs. DH works from home, but it's a new job and his productivity has already dropped this month because he was at the hospital with me (he has no official time off).

Tonight, my mom took my toddler to her house, but she works full time, and this isn't a long-term solution (she needs to bring him back by lunch tomorrow).

So mostly what I need to hear is stories of your toddler being sick and your newborn/you not getting sick. I'm so worried that my little one is going to spike a fever. We're all washing hands like crazy and keeping the boys in separate rooms.
