Yeah, I'd suggest improving your abdominal strength as much as possible. Motherhood and nursing has ruined my back, and I'm trying to climb out of that hole. Being almost done nursing (and we only side lay lately) has really helped.

@Alivoo01: straight out in front of me or curled up under my pillow. OF its straight out it usually ends up under dh's pillow.

Oh yeah and a pillow between my knees, which are curled up to about her feet I guess. Or one bent one straight for balance.

Eta: or sometimes the bottom arm cradles her to me. Again depending on how fussy she is being.

@Foodnerd81: I always use the bottom boob also, but what do you do with your bottom arm?

@Greentea: I totally forgot about the knees!! Naturally I want to be in a fetal position but I bump up against the bottom of DS' feet and stretching them out makes me stiff like a board - either way, uncomfortable!

Omg being a mom literally broke my back! Side lying hurts my neck and even my knees! Just do your best to get comfortable and working on my abs will likely help. It is so hard at night if she keeps popping off. My neck!!!!

@Alivoo01: oh I always have her lying on her side, tummy to tummy with me. I use my top arm to gently hold her there, but she likes lying on her side anyway and frequently rolls there in her sleep. And she eats from the boob closer to the mattress. When she is done and I latches (if she ever does) I either push her gently into her back, or I just scoot back a little, so I can sleep better. Or if she's been really hard to settle I stay there with boob in face, whatever.

@.twist.: I did for awhile, but then he rolls to be on his back and that wakes him up. So he just lays on his back and turns his head. When he wakes up, he automatically turns his head looking for my boob now. *face palm*

Do you prop him up on his side so he can feed from the boob closest to the mattress? That's what I do and then I can comfortably lay on my side.

@Foodnerd81: Pillow on the back is a brilliant idea!!! Thanks for the other tips also! DS could stay latched on forever too! Ugh!

I have the same issue, though it's gotten better as she's gotten older and better able to latch herself. Things that help a little are getting myself comfortable before getting her on, not looking down at her (so have your head on the pillow looking straight, not turned down to your chest- your spine can stay at a more natural angle), and putting a soft squishy pillow behind my back, tucked under my back just a little for a wee but of support. I never got a pregnancy pillow but I think if I had it would be perfect to put behind me. Or leaning against a wall would be nice.

No solution to the popping off to early thing- it's really annoying because she can stay on forEVer.

@Alivoo01: my back is wrecked since becoming a mom! I think it's a combination of carrying his heavy butt around, and breastfeeding in awkward positions.
No advice, just sympathy!

I love being able to nurse side lying especially during those wee hours in the morning so I can squeeze in whatever shut eye I can get. However, the arching of my back and trying to balance on my side to make sure DS can get a good latch is doing a number on my back. It's so achy and sore!! Plus, if I pop him off too early, he gets upset so we have to start all over until he's out out.

What am I doing wrong or suggestions on how to make it more comfortable?
