Since he's out of a swaddle, I wouldn't have any issue with it. Both of my boys were side sleepers and then ended up being tummy sleepers. My 9 month old sleeps on his belly almost every night - we will go in right before we go to bed to roll him back over, but I find him back on his belly every morning.

Both started sleeping on their sides right around 4 months and while they weren't consistent with rolling, they had rolled by that point. I wouldn't worry so much about the side sleeping as long as you have a fan or something going in your room for proper air circulation.

I should also add that LO1 was in his crib at 4 weeks while LO2 was moved at 8 weeks.

@turquoisemama: @caterw: oh yeah, we are out of the swaddle at this point. And no sleep sack either. So his legs and arms are completely free.

@caterw: @Truth Bombs: @turquoisemama: We have been doing some gradual CIO. We put him down on his back, same routine every time, drowsy but awake.. Then 50% chance he'll cry for a bit and fall asleep on his back or half turned. or 50% chance he'll cry for 10 minutes, DH goes in, turns him on his side, pats his back for a couple mins, and then he's asleep.

I seem to remember that my pediatrician told us that it was OK for DD1 to sleep on her side as long as she put herself that way- she has always preferred to curl up in a ball on her side. I also didn't swaddle her because she hated having her arms tied down and would scream until she was free so maybe that's why my ped said it was safe?

My DD preferred sleeping on her side since day 1. We would prop her up by putting a rolled up cloth diaper or swaddle blanket on one side so she could not roll on her own when I was super worried in the beginning. But eventually I just stopped and she was fine. If there are no obstructions in the crib/bassinet and your baby prefers sleeping that way I would say go for it and they'll be fine. If it stresses you out to the point you can't sleep then that is a different story. Mama's gotta sleep!

Are you rolling him to his side? Or does he get in that position on his own? As long as he's getting in that position on his own he's totally fine. My LO is 7 months today and a rolling fool, but I still always put him down on his back. He immediately rolls to his side or tummy, but I want him to get there on his own rather than putting him into a position.

I'd be fine with it since I assume he has good head control at this point. My 4 week old sleeps better on her side and belly due to reflux and while we haven't let her at night yet, she does fine during the day and has enough head control at this point that she can lift and turn her head.

@DesertDreams88: I would worry too much and never end up sleeping. We had to swaddle wean and I thought it was going to be the worst thing ever but it was only bad for a couple nights. Could you train him to fall asleep without back patting? I guess it depends on your child and your comfort level with sleep training.

ETA: odds are he'd be fine if you put him on his side but I remember reading that even when they can roll you should put them on their back to start the night and if they roll on their own it's okay.

Adding: he sleeps in our room, so if he ended up on his belly and cried out, I'd wake up and see it.

He likes to suck in his hands and thumb and does this easier when side sleeping

My LO is 4.5mo and seemingly likes to sleep on his side. He slept on his back for 0-4mo in the RnP and bouncer, but he was either bounced to sleep (naps) or nursed to sleep (at night). Ever since we moved to the PnP we need to pat his back to soothe him at the start of naps / sleep, and he ends up falling asleep that way. We usually try to roll him to his back and that sometimes works, but sometimes wakes.

I know it's ok to let a baby sleep however they want once they are proficient at rolling, but mine is not quite there yet. He can roll back-to-side and side-to-back effortlessly. He has rolled from back to belly 5-7 times. He has rolled belly to back maybe 2-3 times? and not recently, either.

What do you think? Ready for side sleeping yet or no?
