LO is super into signs. He never really did the basic ones ("more," "all done") consistently, but around his birthday he learned "dog" and then his signing really took off.

Some of his favorites: Hat, shoes, outside, crackers, apple, pear, pickle, dog, bird, play, moon, ball, car, bear, music, baby

He just turned 16 months and he knows at least 45 signs. It's pretty amazing because he doesn't really have many spoken words at all - really just "ball" and "dada."

We sign with LO because he's deaf and so far he's gone through a brief period at 6 months where he imitated a lot of signs...it happened around the same time he started babbling. He definitely knows milk and diaper, the two signs I've used most consistently. I probably use all done, more, cute, thank you, mommy, daddy, sleep, good night every day and he seems to respond to sleep and good night. You could try introducing the words for foods, or the routines in your day? Our Teacher of the Deaf just used the strategy of having us add words as we wanted to know them, which seemed pretty logical.

@Torchwood: There's a great series called Signing Time (and Baby Signing Time) available on Netflix, but they only have 1 season. You can stream all of it online for like $10/month and it's pretty effective for teaching sign. We also use apps for looking up signs quickly, or just google them.

No advice on what to do next, but I did some basic stuff with one of the kids I nannied. She started signing back more pretty quickly, and I think all done. She was under a year at that point, but I don't remember exactly. Neither I nor the parents did it religiously, so I expect she would have picked up more if we had. I plan to do it with our LO's, but I've never taken any ASL classes or anything so not sure how much I really will.

Does/did anyone do sign language with their LOs? How old were they and what signs did they learn first?

I studied ASL in university and loved it, so throughout my year long maternity leave I would sign with DD. She didn't pick up a lick of it though so I kind of gave up and stopped once she turned 1 and started daycare.

But - within the last month, out of nowhere, she started signing! So strange since it had been months since I last signed to her. She is really picking it up quickly now (she's 16 months). She does: more, thank you, home, love, eat, bath, all done, dog and milk.

Any advice on which ones to introduce next?
