She smiled whenever we would sign Bath or our made-up sign for Going Out. You can make up your own signs or watch the baby for their signs. As long as you both understand it. Though it will be hard to transfer to a daycare sign. Then we taught her more but she couldn't get it so she would say Muh and cry instead. It's so cool when you know that s/he understands what you say and even more awesome when s/he signs back to you. This is the book I read. It's a good book but to be honest, it's not really necessary. You can just start using signs with your LO while saying the word at the same time. It's been a while, but if I remember correctly, I started signing at around 6 months and DD #1 started signing back at 10 months. Her favorite first signs were "milk" and "more".
