I'm always curious about this too because DS picks/scratches at his ear. I brought it up at his 6 month wellness checkup, and his ears were clear. He's been picking at his ears again recently and has been sick, but I don't want to bring him into the pedi only for them to be like nope. He's good.

DS normally doesn't run a fever when he's sicks. Even when he had RSV. He ran a fever once, and that's when he had the flu.

LO currently has her first ear infection. It started out just like @looch: said. She got a cold (she was very congested) then her temp kept going up until it finally went over 103. At that point I knew she most likely had an ear infection, and the ped confirmed it. She had also been pulling on her ear a little.

Sometimes nothing. Most times, it has followed a runny nose. He's only had fever with an ear infection about twice. Generally, he's just been "off." He had enough that he needed tubes and his adenoids taken out. It's best to get him checked out!

My son typically gets ear infections following a cold, because the congestion from his nose settles in his ears and he can't drain it well. My understanding is that this is typical in children, because their canals are flat and the congestion pools, causing an infection.

The tell tale sign for us is a fever out of nowhere. It's been an ear infection every time.

What have been the signs of ear infection in your little one?

LO has had a low-grade fever for almost 3 days now and has been really fussy, has been waking up frequently (sometimes with sharp cries), has runny nose and in the last 24 hours or so has started shaking his head back and forth (he has never done this before). At first I thought he had learned how to shake his head as a form of communication (he's 11 mo), but now I'm putting it all together and wondering if he has an ear infection.

I'm going to take him in to the ped tomorrow, but thought I'd ask how you've been able to tell.

Thanks bees!
