One big contraction, then I didn't feel like eating dinner. Should have been a dead giveaway.

With DD1, 36 hours before early labour began, I experienced 'lightning crotch' (awesome name for it). Just as I was drifting off to sleep, I experienced what felt like several electric shocks to the nether region. It wasn't painful per se but it was so weird and distinctive! Apparently that is somewhat common shortly before labour begins and it was true for me.

Other than that, with both girls I got a distinctive bloody show the morning before labour began for real. DD1 it was pretty obvious what it was, DD2 there was seriously a pin drop sized speck of blood but it continued like that all day and labour started late that night.

My giant elephant cankles/feet suddenly went back to normal about 24 hours before labor began. I even sent pictures to my family because it was so obvious. I think we all kind of were wondered if something might be happening but everyone was afraid to say something.

No signs the first time at all. Second time, I was having prodromal labor for a full 8 days before real labor. I actually wasn't frustrated by it though! And it made my "real" labor that much more surprising because I'd stopped expecting it to progress into anything.

@LindsayLou: oh yeah I forgot about the extra energy! I was always in bed by 10 and the night before I went into labour I was up until 12 or 1. Meaning I got like noooo sleep! Ha

I was super tired and just off. We had gone to a wedding the night before and I woke up super early and had an urge to clean all my patio furniture. I scrubbed from 7-9 am like a mad woman, ate a big breakfast and went back to bed until 4:30. So unlike me but I was finally feeling the effects of being nearly 39 weeks pregnant. When I woke up-I took a shower and lost my mucous plug and my water started leaking. My contractions started soon after that.

I was due on a Monday. Strong, painful contractions all of Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday they mellowed out. Looking back that lull was a sign. I was wired, wide awake and antsy, even though I was exhausted. Went to bed at 2 am, lay awake for 15 minutes , water broke suddenly. Looking back, I think all of that energy was a sign. I'm very grateful that my labor was short, since if been awake for over 24 hours when she was born.

Nothing with DD1 (born at 40w5d) . With DD2, I just had a feeling that the contractions I'd been having on and off for 24 hours were going to turn into labor (born at 39w).

Nope!! No signs it was happening before it just started.

I mean the morning before I went into labor I was having super mild contractions that fizzled out after a few hours, but at that point it was clear to me it would be happening sometime in the next day or so. I went into actual labor at 2am the next day.

@MrsADS: sadly you just described me at least once a week for the past 3 weeks probably- extra sore, extra moody (like last week he made a move in traffic that I disagreed with and got in a crying fight over it), and this week I cried over getting disconnected from our pediatrician's office. And every time I'm like, of I'm probably so crazy because I'm about to go into labor. Nope- just plain old pregnant crazy.

Like I said I'm not that antsy for it to start (yet) more sick of not knowing when it will happen!

Mine was very straightforward - had my membranes swept in the afternoon, went for a long walk, and started early labor while out walking. I will say that when the contractions started becoming stronger I went into super nesting mode - the last few hours before we went to the hospital we swept, vacuumed, and cleaned the kitchen! I felt this weird uncomfortableness with the state of the house.

Nothing out of the ordinary. The night before I had an OB appt and took a long walk. Later that night, I had the bloody show so I figured that was it and started labor the next morning.

Well, I had BH and actually preterm labor for MONTHS before I actually had LO... but the day before I went into labor was, in hindsight, different!

Like @peaches1038 I also had a sore belly. Not like GI upset or menstrual cramping/contraction feeling, but sore - like I'd done a workout or something. We went the grocery store and I was walking around telling my husband how sore my belly was. (In hindsight I think maybe this was LO dropping down into a better position or something?)

Also the whole day before I went into labor I was SO CRANKY. It was a Sunday and we went to church and my husband was running a little late, and I was so mad in the car on the way to church I was literally in tears and yelling at him (not something I would normally do!). And later that day we were at Target getting our video monitor, and they were being difficult about taking my registry coupons and store credit, etc. and I almost started crying, I was so upset.

Anyway, that was about 5pm. I woke up at about 5:30/6am the next morning and my water broke and I was having contractions. Baby was born at 1pm that day!

I was just done. It was the weirdest thing because I was very active while pregnant. Zero Braxton Hicks, zero dilation, no signs at all. The day before i was scheduled to start work leave, I walked into my bosses office and told him I was done and going to go ahead and start my leave. I went into labor the next morning!

I have had several days of just feeling "off" where I'm like, yeah, maybe this is a sign. But apparently not since I'm still pregnant!

@Jackiedavis87: this is my second and I still have those "is that a contraction? Oh, nope, just gas." And I actually have been having real contractions too, so I should be familiar with the difference. Plus some nights this baby must be in starfish pose or something because she is just stretching my belly from every angle.

The night before I went into labor, we went out to eat with some friends and my stomach was super uncomfortable. Not like GI upset, but just sore. I chalked it up to having to lean forward so much to hear the conversation since it was loud in the restaurant. The next day (39 weeks exactly), I nested like a crazy person. Cleaned our whole place top to bottom, finished a couple projects that I had been putting off, finished decorating the nursery and packed our hospital bags. Ate dominoes pizza for dinner (huge mistake) and my water broke at 9pm. Contractions started an hour later and had him at 9 the next morning. I had just said a couple days before that I felt like he was never coming! Had no signs at all. Good luck, hope it's soon for you!!

Like @jhd: I just felt off all day. I didn't have specific symptoms I could point to but before bed that night I told my husband that I just felt like he should pack up some things for the hospital. I was only 37+5 so he didn't really seem to believe me but he did it to make me happy. Water broke at 1am that night.

The night before I went into labor I was really restless....pacing around the apartment like a caged animal. I spent well over an hour trying to take apart our water filter because I decided it wasn't clean enough. And I yelled at my mom when she suggested I take a break from it 😋

Unfortunately I had no signs. I googled everything like crazy too since I was 40+4. But one night/early morning I saw part of my mucus plug when I went to the bathroom (sorry tmi) and contractions started soon after. That was it. The day before I felt completely normal.
I was ok the day before, we went out for lunch and a walk at the park.

I'm super interested in answers to this question too. At almost 36 weeks I've had zero signs of labor. I've had all of 3 Braxton hicks. I've have been nesting for about 10 strait weeks though, as if all the baby stores on earth are gonna sell out before I get enough diapers.😉 This is my first so every little twinge I wonder " is that a contraction, or gas....just gas" 😕 lol. I have pregnancy induced hypertension ,and my OB wants to induce me between 38 and 39 weeks. My body needs to get with it, but the little man seems super cozy under my ribs. ☺️☺️

Looking back, did you have any clues or signs that labor was going to start soon, even if you didn't realize it at the time? Or did it really go from not labor to labor? Like, crazy nesting, or going to the bathroom a lot, or whatever?

With C, on Saturday, 3 days before my due date, felt totally normal. Woke up Sunday having mild but consistent contractions and that was it (still a long early labor but no signs before early labor began).

This time every little thing I'm like, oh maybe that means labor is going to start! I wanted to clean the kitchen- is that nesting? Went to the bathroom- body getting ready for labor?? More Braxton hicks last night, labor?!?

39 weeks and 3 days right now. I wouldn't mind a couple more days so the toddler and I can both get rid of our colds but I can't help obsessing!
