I'd insist on the gun staying in the car at my house. There was an incident in idaho where a toddler reaches in his moms concealed carry purse at Walmart and accidentally shot and killed his mom!

I don't think a concealed carry purse is a very safe option. A purse can easily be snatched by an attacker or thief, unlike when a weapon is holstered on the body. Or if a purse is set down absentmindedly, it can be opened and accessed by someone else. For all those reasons, I'm not a fan.

@coopsmama: My dad has a Utah license. 😀

@Torchwood: Assuming that she is a responsible gun owner, I'm sure she will be happy to talk with you about how she safely carries in her purse. I would just approach it as wanting to know what she does and how to make sure your children are safe when she is around and not from a "guns are dangerous" and/or accusatory standpoint.

@Torchwood: Well, I think if she's visiting in your home she needs to abide by your rules and if your rule is a gun goes in the safe - that's it. Even if her daughter is well trained and she is willing to take a risk with her obeying or not, your daughter is not trained to expect a weapon in a bag so she should be understanding that your comfort lies in it being safe and out of reach and or locked. Like, if that gun my one year old had stumbled upon had been reasonably placed up high on top of a fridge or book shelf or something I would have been okay with that because at one he wasn't climbing. Now at past two and a half? Not so much!! But I think reasonable accommodations should be made knowing the children that are around and whatnot. Clearly leaving a purse on the floor with a gun in it is not safe for kids and if she is willing to do that in your home with your child there I think she needs to find other accommodations.

I think the best way is to not assume she isn't already being safe (and I don't know how the purse thing works.. my first thought is that is way different than a holster but what do I know, I don't have one..) and just ask how she does these things and then if you have an issue with that approach it from a standpoint about keeping the kids safe. Ultimately though you cannot force people to do things the way you want, and I wouldn't want to try because I wouldn't trust that someone who vehemently disagrees with me in the first place was really going to follow through if it was done begrudgingly.

I would just bring it up to her, first. I believe her reaction and her explanation will probably tell you a lot.

Second, most concealed carry licenses do not transfer state to state. I know my husband has one for our state (which is hilarious because he never carries, I don't think he has once except for when he went hunting and his weapon was literally just transferred from safe to car to woods to back again) and I know he is only allowed to in our state. However serious concealed carriers usually have what is called the Utah license which I believe allows you to legally carry in 30+ states. My dad has this one. So there is a possibility she has that one and is legally allowed to carry in many states.

Honestly, living where I do and having had a crazy experience where my then one year old pulled a loaded handgun from behind someone's arm chair, I am always asking anyone whose home we go to whether or not all weapons are put away and if I knew someone usually carried in their purse I wouldn't hesitate to ask them to put it up and out of reach or in a safe or whatever happy medium they can come up with. At the very least it doesn't need to be loaded if she's visiting in your home!

Finally, I do know a gal with 3 kids who carries in her bag. She is SO safe with it. She is very strict about it, always has it on her, and leaves it at home in safe if going to someone's house, etc. She had other safety measures in place but I'm forgetting them all. She actually pulled her gun on someone once who attempted to rob her at gun point while high (she was a barista at a drive up coffee stand) and was able to get him to drop his weapon and take off. The police were able to nab him. Anyways, all that to say I've been amazed by how she handles her weapon and her respect for safety. I personally would never carry but seeing her has made me realize that not everyone is immature in how they handle that privilege. (But don't get me started on the gun owner who had the gun behind their arm chair... I can't even. :bummed: )

Also, what's the best way to keep a gun in a purse safe? I don't think she'd be okay with us asking her to just lock it up when we're around. She clearly considers her daughter perfectly safe, and she generally doesn't agree with us on parenting so she's already kind of argumentative about things.

@Mrs D: I hope you're right and she'll be fine with discussing it! She's sort of gung ho to the point of defensiveness about them having guns, but surely when we're discussing kids?

So...in my experience...responsible gun owners in our lives are happy to have the discussion. I have never been met with "its none of your business" and I always preface it that I am concerned about LO.

My dad is easy...he has a gun...no bullets...gun is stored without the cartridge (which is empty anyways). Both are on opposite ends of his huge walk in closet. I dont have much concern.

My Step Dad on the other hand has multiple guns. Before K started crawling I asked on time while I was there if I could please see where/how they kept guns. My mom and step dad were happy to show me and explain all of the locks/securities. I felt comfortable with that.

Recently my mom/SD had an incident in their neighborhood (circling helicpoters in the middle of the night) which made them want to have a hand gun out of the safe. She mentioned that SD told her he was putting the gun on the night stand just FYI.

I responded back - "hey...just FYI if K was there and something like that happened I would hope you would not allow the gun to be left on the nightstand"...she (clearly had not thought about it) and said "hmmm...you're right...would nightstand drawer with safety on be ok for you - just for the overnight hours?".

I told her that it would - but that preferably she would lock the gun back in the safe in the morning before allowing K out of the room she sleeps in. (SD sleeps in later - so I just didnt want K roaming the house with a gun just in the top drawer).

Like I said - I have always had open honest conversations about my fears and I have always have them met well by the gun owners I know.

I think just be open/honest and express your concern that it is not her ability to properly handle the gun but more the kids....

I knew SIL had her concealed carry license, but yesterday she shared a video on FB of some bystander stopping an armed robbery with the comment that this is why she always has a gun in her purse. I didn't realize she always has it, and I'm REALLY uncomfortable about it. We have a gun, but there's a big difference between one in a safe that's rarely taken out and one in a purse that can be left sitting around.

What steps do we need to take to keep LO safe? SIL lives out of state, and I'm not sure how the laws work with crossing state lines, but maybe that means she won't have it here when visiting? We'll definitely tell her she can't bring it in our house. But when we're visiting her I'm concerned. I would assume since she has a 5yo she has something she does with it to keep it safe, but I don't know. I'll have DH talk to her since she's his sister, though I'm not sure what to say. But even if she puts it somewhere safe, it would just be so easy for her to set it down for a minute and a kid get to it. Plus what about if we went out, and she left it hanging on her chair at a restaurant or something? We'll teach LO about gun safety, but there's a huge span when she'll be big enough to potentially get ahold of it but too young to understand.

I don't know. I'm probably overreacting since we very rarely see her, but this has me totally freaked out.
