@coacheswife123: 15 minutes prior to a meal (if that is when you want to give the Zantac) should be plenty. I always chose to give the meds prior to my LO's feeding . . . I viewed the milk as sort of a *chaser* to take away any left over bad taste in LO's mouth. I hope your LO feels better soon!

We were on Prilosec, now Prevacid. I give it to him mixed with 15-30mls of milk at the beginning of a feeding to dilute it.

@coacheswife123: I give him Zantac first thing in the morning after he eats and just shoot it into the back side of his cheek and hold him up and sway him around until he swallows it. He gets his next dose before I feed him prior to bedtime. I found that these are the times when he is calmest and the least likely to spit it out. My ped said it doesn't matter if you give before or after a meal... Just try to space it out every 12 hours and it will always be in his system.

@coacheswife123: That is a great plan! Ugh I know! This was our first problem with it! LO would refuse it also and spit it back out. I don't think he ever got any at that age. We used the syringe and I would squirt it in the back of his mouth. If he still does not get it down for you in a few days to a week I would call the doctor and ask for something else.

@anbanan15: ped just said twice a day ! It is so disgusting. When I give LO gripe water or Tylenol I usually squirt it in a bottle nipple and he takes it easily, but not this stuff. I'm going to have to shoot it down his throat ! I guess I will try to give it about 30 min before he nurses so it can get in his system before the milk !

@coacheswife123: Zantac can be given with out without food. What did your doctor recommend?

When LO was first given it he was to have a dose AM, mid-day, PM, but he would never take it and it didn't work anyway so we switched to Prevacid which was an am/pm dose and has to be given about an hour before food. When LO was put back on Zantac a few months ago he was given it just before bedtime and his Prevacid moved to an am only dose (he got the same amount as the two doses just all am because we thought it was causing insomnia. The Zantac was to take the edge off so he could fall asleep).

That was the long answer. The short answer: whenever you can get your LO to take it :)

@winniebee: My LO did the same thing (arch/fuss), and all I got from the Ped was Zantac (which did not work, and it is soooo incredibly weight dependent). LO is now on Prevacid (a fairly high dose as well) and is fiiiiiiinally starting to get some relief--and some sleep!

@coacheswife123: I am going through the same thing with my LO and he almost always has very gurgly breathing. He went on Zantac which helped the reflux but not the wet breathing. He has to have a bronchoscopy next week where they put a scope through his nose and down the airway, and they believe he just has "soft" airways which for some babies can take a full year to firm up. Its called loringo malecia or something like that. It's nothing dangerous but they want to do the bronchoscopy just to make sure. The choking has always scared me.. It's like he's choking on mucus but he always ends up swallowing it. Just wanted to let you know that I'm going through something very similar and I hope the Zantac helps!

@coacheswife123: Good! FWIW, Zantac did not work for my son, so persist if you don't see improvement. He wasn't much of a spitter until around 4 months, but would arch and get mad and was clearly not comfortable during feedings. Prilosec did the trick, though!

Ugh, my post from earlier didn't post. :(

I think lo's stomach should be pretty much empty by 2 hours after. Reflux starts happening immediately, but is definitely worse when the tummy is full. We did an upper GI on lo (he drinks barium while under X-ray) and it was amazing to see the liquid just go up and down, up and down.

Curious to see what your ped says!

@coacheswife123: my LO has reflux/GERD (Sandifer's) and he does the choking while asleep thing. He will be sleeping fine and all of a sudden start choking and gasp while doing so then go back to sleep. Sometimes it cause him to sit up while gasping. I've brought up apnea many times as I had it as a child and doctors always conclude it's reflux related. I second the pediatric GI suggestion. We see one and he has been amazing did LO's care.

FWIW LO's reflux wasn't diagnosed until 8 weeks. I complained from day one but because he was gaining well our pedi didn't think he had reflux even with all the projectile vomit. One pedi gave me Zantac to shut me up at his 2 month appointment and not even a week later we were back in office with bloody stools (she also didn't believe food allergies). We saw another pedi who immediately confirmed reflux and started seeing pedi GI the following week. Be persistent for answers! Good luck!

@MsLipGloss: his sleep is great! I'm also wondering if this may be attributed to a growth spurt because be has been eating more lately and sleeping a lot more. Wondering if his little tummy is adjusting to more intake because we have never had reflux issues before. He is 6 weeks old! The only time he really cries is when he is hungry

I'm sure I'm stressing for no reason but glad that we will see the doc tomorrow

But the gurgle breathing worries me a bit. LO's breathing has never been affected by her reflux. So I def think seeing the ped is a good idea.

Does this sound like silent reflux ??

May spit up a tiny bit directly after eating but not normally
Will gasp for air 1-2 hrs after feeding while sleeping
May cough after gasping but usually passes quickly
I sit him up and sometimes he will burp and spit up
Spit up is chalky so I think partially digested
Baby seems happy and not in pain
Breathing sometimes sounds gurgly or congested when this happens

The part that worries me is him kind of choking in his sleep. It doesn't even wake him usually, though

Have an appt with our ped tomorrow
