You want to make sure the chairs stay on the rug even when they're pushed back and people are sitting in them, otherwise it gets to be a pain. FWIW, my living room and dining room are open to each other with wood floors and we don't have matching rugs. The living room rug is highly patterned with a red background. The one under the dining table is a dark indigo blue (solid color, but the wool has some variegation so it still has some visual interest). I think it's best not to be too matchy, as long as the rugs coordinate in some way -- let each rug define its own space and stand on its own!
