Mr. Bear ended up taking me to our local urgent care tonight to get the splinter removed. My first day of the New Year and it ended in a minor surgery! It took the doc 30 minutes and 3 pairs of tweezers before she finally got it out. At least she numbed it first

Ichthammol. It's stinky and needs covered by a bandaid but it'll get it out or at least closer to the surface.

@Mrs. Grizzly Bear: I've done the baking soda trick!!! Worked like a charm. After about an hour, the splinter had worked its way out and was easily pulled out. Good luck!!!

My mom had a mirrored medicine cabinet door shatter in her hands and there were tons of tiny shards of glass embedded in her skin. The most effective way to get the smallest pieces out was to leave a banana peel on the skin over night (held in place by a bandage) ... there are some natural enzymes in the banana that help draw the splinters from your skin. I know it sounds crazy, but it really did work! http://www.wikihow.com/Use-Banana-Peels

I have had to have splinters removed by a doctor because it was so deep. Soaking is a good way to go, warm salt water will also help prevent infection. Wood tends to work it's way out on it's own over time and metal moves father in.

@yoursilverlining: I'm not even sure I could reach it without trying to make the entry hole bigger, it managed to go in that deep. And through a sock no less!!

I've only ever used tweezers to pull them out. Needle-nosed tweezers work best! Ouch!

How do you get a deep splinter out? I managed to get one right in the crease of my big toe - it went in and up so now it's on the pad of my toe. It *feels* like it hit the bone although I can see the dark outline of it just barely through the skin. I'm not going to try pushing it out - it's too deep, I don't want it to break, and the hole is too small for what I'm seeing. So how would you get it out?

I came across a Pin the other day that said if you mix up a solution of warm water and baking soda to form a paste, put it on the opening of the splinter wound, cover it with a bandage for a few hours and the splinter would come out. Another pin said 24 hours. I admit I tried this for a few hours. Then I tried the "soak your splinter injury in white vinegar for 30 minutes" routine with similarly no luck. It effing hurts :(
