I was actually doing research on this very topic last night as I am planning on a stopover in either Hong Kong or Singapore this summer (sans child, though). I found this website for HK which was helpful in my own planning and may be helpful for you: http://www.nextstophongkong.com.

I was born and raised in HK so I'm biased

There are actually a lot of kid friendly places in HK and also a lot of nature!

Having lived in HK for four years, I think Singapore with the kids. Hong Kong does have Disney as well as Ocean Park, but I like Tokyo Disney a lot better (if you think you'll make it there). In general I just find Hong Kong a little tough to get around with kids, but if yours will enjoy the different modes of transportation, riding replies, ferries, incline trams, and double decker busses can turn into part of the fun.

Singapore is easier to get around with kids and has more of what I think of as kid-friendly attractions (museums, pools, zoos, etc.) whereas in Hong Kong I was mostly taking visitors to see local sites - a gold fish market, bird garden, flower market, etc....which may or may not appeal to kids. But HK does have a new Ferris wheel like the Singapore Flyer, and a fun Maritime museum close by. The hiking is amazing in Hong Kong if you think your kids would be up for it.

@T-Mom: thanks so much! We will only have 1.5 days in SP, so we really have to target what we want to see/do.

@lamariniere: ohh! I forgot that in SP we had planned to go you Santosa island. It's really kid friendly and there is some kind of sky ride that takes you there. We just ran out of time.

@lamariniere: top 3 for SP were ArtScience Museum (next to Marina Bay Sands hotel/casino ), Gardens By the Bay, and eating local foods in Teong Baru market (cheap kid friendly foods like porridge and noodles) or at mall food courts (so yummy). They also enjoyed the Singapore Flyer. We wanted to go to the zoo but there was a heat wave while we were there and it was just too overwhelming. We thought about going to universal studios but decided the kids are probably too young.

For HK I don't think I have 3 things. my DD was 2 and had horrible jet lag.. The ride up to Victoria peak was very nice and Disney was so hot. I guess #3 was the food? We ate lots of mango pudding and had amazing dim sum. I would love to go back now the kids are bigger!

@farawayyama: We also rode the Singapore Flyer (Ferris wheel), the kids enjoyed. We also visited Gardens By the Bay, which is where the super trees are. The Cloud Forest and Flower Dome part were nice and enclosed (aka air conditioned).

@farawayyama: we will probably go to both destinations while we're in the philippines, but disney hong kong is mighty tempting! the kids have been to disneyland, but they were so young (olive under 2) they hardly remember.

Personally, I prefer Singapore but I think Hong Kong wins out in the kid friendly part for Disney alone. Hong Kong Disney is famous for not being as busy as the other Disneys. When I went, my friend and I were able to ride every ride in the park in one day and go on our favourites multiple times!

Both cities would be great with kids though! The Ferris wheel in Singapore (name escapes me) is fantastic, as are the super trees and the zoo!

We just returned from a trip to SE Asia including Singapore. It was a very doable trip with my 4 and 7 yr olds. We ate a lot, did touristy (kid-friendly) things, and a lot of shopping too. They had a lot of fun, and it's a very small place. I have also been to HK several times, but only with my then 2 yr old. We went to HK Disney, Victoria Peak, etc. and also did a lot of mall walking (seems to be the theme in Asia) and eating. They are both pretty kid friendly. ETA I think I prefer Singapore, myself.

I want to take a quick trip out of the country for 4 days in April with the kids. I haven't done any research on Singapore or Hong Kong and haven't been to either city, but there are usually great deals on flights to both destinations.

Where would you go with a 4 and 6 year old?
