R has more awake time in the morning than after her nap. She typically naps 12:30-3 and then is in bed by 7:30. I don't let her sleep past 4 (sometimes she takes epic naps) and if that's when she gets up, she's usually in bed by 8. sometimes it takes some rolling around, but if she's fussing for over an hour, it usually means she pooped. :/

ETA: she's 17 months.

@yoursilverlining: tell us your secret!

@jmarionsmith: Miss A is almost 21 months and naps for 1.5-2 hours sometime between 1300 and 1600 (I don't let her sleep any later) and generally she's asleep by 2000. These days we spend 20-30 minutes nursing, reading books and snuggling then I hang out on her room while she falls asleep in the cot.

5-6 hours. He naps from about 1-230 or 130-3 and goes to bed at 8/830. Lately If he takes a long nap (2 hrs or more) he needs more like 830/9 bed time. He's 25 months and has never had particularly high sleep needs.

It's about 5 hours from nap wake up. I try to wind down around 4 hours. If I get the timing right she's out in under 20 minutes. If I don't we are up for an hour or so.

24 months, naps a solid 2 hours usually between 1-3, sometimes a little later end time (like 3:30). She goes to bed at 8 and usually falls asleep within 10 minutes on her own; so about 5 hours awake time.

@jmarionsmith: I had to rock LO to sleep until almost 20 months and now she puts herself to sleep without a fight - I NEVER thought we would get here!!! So here's holding out hope your routine gets easier!

@locavore_mama: oh i've definitely noticed that too. i've nixed factiming before bedtime with grandparents because he gets sooo hyped up, that definitely was not helping anything. i will try to stretch out our nightly reading time. and spend the last hour before bed in his room with no other distractions.

@MsLipGloss: wow that just sounds amazing. i'm going to start with the later bedtime because he seems to be on the lower end of sleep needs but if that doesn't work i'll definitely be trying the earlier bedtime! it's such a guessing game!

@mrskc: in my attempt to sleep train last night i sat in a chair in his doorway, he stayed calm for about 20-30 minutes but then just started playing in his bed because i wasn't close enough to stop him. i wonder if moving the chair next to his bed will help that and then gradually moving it back towards the door? eta: i would totally be ok with the situation as it is right now IF we didn't have a baby on the way and IF DH worked a more normal schedule. :bummed:

@jmarionsmith: I would definitely want to fix things with baby #2 coming if DH couldn't do bedtime. DH actually used to sit in the glider or leave the room when he was awake but we've regressed a little (not sure why) but DH has to lay next to him. But we are ok with the situation for now. Can you try slowly moving away or sitting in a chair in there? Do you keep things mellow before bed? We dim the lights in his room now and spend time in there reading books to relax him. And he has his lovey that helps him a little too.

@jmarionsmith: We have to wake her up at 6:40. Occasionally, she will wake a little earlier on her own. On the weekends, she usually sleeps until 7ish. Fwiw, if I am not able to put her down until 7ish (or later), she doesn't sleep any later, and sometimes will even wake earlier (around 6ish).

It has been a long sleep road for us, but we are in a good place right now.

@jmarionsmith: I also find that if she gets a lot of excitement before bedtime it takes her much longer to fall asleep. We try to keep things very mellow after bath time.

@MsLipGloss: wow! what time does she wake up in the morning? i would LOVE for him to go to bed that early but he only sleeps 10.5 hours a night so that would be an incredibly early wake up for us. (unless an earlier bedtime actually made him stretch out his sleep!)

ahh why can't kids just all follow the same formula!? ;)

F is 21 months and has about the same routine. Nap 12-2 (approximately), bedtime at 7:30. Usually he's asleep by 8. We do sit with him (he's in a floor bed) until he's asleep, but I ignore him the whole time (after nursing). I bring my phone to scroll the Internet and hang out. I've started scooting closer to the door to try and "wean" him off of us being right there.

My husband and I think that it takes so long because of how light/warm it is in the summer? We don't have black out shades or AC, but nights when it's stormy (so, cool and dark earlier) he seems to fall asleep earlier.

ETA: F won't let my husband do the "sitting" part either. Its always me! And I'd be frustrated too if I was pregnant - is there a comfy chair in there you can rest on?

@mrskc: you're situation is so similar to mine! at least i'm not the only one! i'm just really struggling with this because he will not let DH do bedtime, and even if he did, DH works nights so he's not home 4-5 nights a week.

with baby sister coming in a couple of months i don't know how I'm going to handle this once DH goes back to work. i think thats why it's mentally killing me.

@locavore_mama: yes. :crying: i'm just awful at sleep training. my heart can't take it. and DH working nights makes it even harder because i don't have anyone to commiserate with.

@Smurfette: so glad your situation has improved!

@jmarionsmith: My LO just turned 22 months, and she naps from 12-2. If she sleeps a normal amount (1+ hours), I aim for a bedtime of 6:15ish. If she has a crappy nap, I have her in bed no later than 6 (and sometimes 5:45ish).

@cascademom: see there's this tiny, tiny part of my brain that's wondering if he's overtired. from morning wake up to nap time is 4-5 hours, depending on how early he gets up, and like i said earlier, we don't have this issue at nap!

but i'm worried if i try an earlier bedtime i'll just end up sitting in his room longer than i do already and i. just. can't.

@jmarionsmith: It shocks me. She just rolls around, plays with her bunny, but doesn't make a peep, for the most part. A month ago this never happen, it would be 20+ mins of whinny and then would cry before she would go to sleep. The new day care is helping since they nap later (and she gets a good nap) the awake time is better. I would keep her up till 730 and then put her down but sometimes she is asleep by 730. So I am going to skip with 7 for now.

We've been dealing with the same thing and pushing his bedtime helped him fall asleep quicker but it still can take 30 min - 1 hour and we've had nights it's taken more than an hour. DH lays or sits next to him. Nap time it only takes him 10 minutes max to fall asleep. Last night DH turned on the projector on this white noise machine we have and he said he fell asleep quicker last night.

He usually goes down for a nap between 11:30-12:30 and wakes up between 2-3. He goes to bed around 8-8:30. We've found he needs to be up about 6 hours after his nap. If he wakes up later than 3 then bedtime is closer to 9.

@locavore_mama: @Weagle: i think i need to move bedtime back. i'll aim for between 8 and 8:30 tonight (since he is actually taking a longer nap today because of my poor, poor attempt to sleep train last night :bummed: )

@Smurfette: i wouldn't mind if it took him an hour to fall asleep, IF i didn't have to sit with him! that's the frustrating part!

i know for adults i've read that if you fall asleep instantly you're over tired and if it takes longer than half an hour you're not tired enough. but i don't know if that applies to kids?

We keep LO's weekend naps similar to daycare's. He takes his nap at 1-1:30pm. He sleeps about 2 hours. Then, it's about 4-5 hours until bedtime.

Usually she is up from her nap around 2-230 and I put her in the crib at 7. She falls asleep between 730-800 lately.

At 22 months my LO had an 8 pm bedtime. Maybe try it pushing it later? He may not be tired enough, but having the down time in the crib is energizing him a bit.
